Autoimmunity expert Po-Jen Chen delivered a speech in the Department of Life Science

Professor Po-Jen Paul Chen is the 15th class of Tunghai University’s Department of Life Science, the 14th class of Tunghai’s Outstanding Alumni, as well as a professor in UCLA’s Department of Medicine and member of International Advisory Committee for the International Congress of Antiphospholipid Antibodies. On November 30th, Professor Chen was invited to share his research and findings over the past few years. Professor Chen is an autoantibody authority focusing on phospholipid antibody specialized in research on immunology, rheumatology, autoimmunity, and systemic lupus etythematosis.
The speech topic was mainly on Pathogenesis of the Antiphospholipid Syndrome. Antiphospholipid Syndrome (known as APS) is a general name for diseases causing autoimmune-related clinical symptoms, especially referring to those of antiphospholipid antibody. Its clinical symptoms vary, including blood clots, miscarriages, autoimmune failures, heart valve defects, skin diseases, and more. Besides sharing the current research status on blood clots forming mechanics of the medical industry worldwide, Prof. Chen also introduced the reasons why antiphospholipid antibodies (APA) caused the formation of blood clots and its relation with APS. The attended students learned a lot through his comprehensive presentation.
Not only does Professor Chen contribute to the world with his researches, as a former student of the department, he also devotes himself into cultivating the young. He has been assisting with the academic and research developments of Tunghai’s Department of Life Science. This time, besides supporting his own trip to Taiwan, Prof. Chen even donates his honorarium received from an international conference in Beijing as scholarships for students of the Department of Life Science. He takes real actions to encourage and support his juniors to thrive academically.
