Through practical actions to improve the ecological environment, Tunghai University was honored with the Silver Award at the first Taiwan Biodiversity Awards, making it one of the few universities to receive the recognition. The 2023 Taiwan Biodiversity Awards Ceremony and Forum, organized by the Taiwan Sustainable Energy Research Foundation (TAISE), aimed to call for efforts from the public to contribute to the planet while acknowledging the public and private sectors that have made significant contributions to promoting biodiversity. Among them, Tunghai University received the Silver Award (Non-profit Organization Category) for its active response to the core concept of biodiversity through the efforts in the restoration of the Dongda Brook and integration of the surrounding environment to present “a new paradigm of an urban hub with a green network plus blue network."
Vice President Jo-Shu Chang stated that in 2020, Tunghai University collaborated with the Water Resources Agency of Taichung City Government to secure funding for the National Water Environment Improvement Program, working together to improve the Dongda Brook. Through this collaboration, the environmental beneficiaries became active protectors, reducing reliance on traditional engineering methods and adopting energy-efficient designs using the valley terrain and gravity-fed water transmission. The water quality has improved significantly through such innovative practice of sustainable governance and results in the award for Tunghai University. VP Jo-Shu Chang also mentioned that Tunghai University is currently incorporating its unique labor education, awareness of sustainability education, and the university's sustainable governance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Tunghai University Life Science Department tenured professor Yimin Zhuo emphasized that there are two key points in the university’s nature-based solutions. First, by creating a high-quality ecological environment, they reintroduce native animals from Dadu Mountain to establish a sustainable forest ecological chain in Tunghai University; second, through labor education, they integrate sustainability education into the curriculum, leading students to immerse themselves in nature, appreciate its beauty, and gain a deeper understanding of a sustainable ecology. Dr. Zhuo mentioned that Tunghai University is further educating and mobilizing faculty, staff, students, local residents, and the general public through the restoration of the Dongda Brook, aiming to achieve a shared vision on biodiversity.
