According to the latest 2023 engineering subject ranking by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, Tunghai University has secured the top position in Central Taiwan. According to Tunghai University, besides the area in science and technology, international students coming to Taiwan to learn Mandarin after the pandemic is also on the rise. The University is committed to promoting both online and offline teaching and building the top Mandarin teaching center in central Taiwan.
Tunghai University establishes the premier Chinese Language Center in Central Taiwan to attract the return of foreign students
Being renowned for its excellent humanities and social science disciplines, Tunghai University’s recent efforts have made remarkable progress in the fields of engineering and physics. In the engineering subject ranking in the 2023 THE World University Rankings, Tunghai University is ranked right after the top five national universities in Taiwan - National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University, National Chiao Tung University, National Cheng Kung University, and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology.
Chin-Yin Huang, Dean of the College of Engineering at Tunghai, mentioned that the College has six professors listed in the "Most Influential Scientists of All Time (1960-2021)" ranking, with four of them also included in the "2021 Annual Influential Scientists". This illustrated the excellence of Tunghai University as a comprehensive university.
Chief International Office Min-Hsun Liao pointed out that Tunghai University has always outstood its peers in the humanities and social sciences areas. Its prestigious Chinese Language Center (CLC) enjoys a long-standing reputation internationally. The teachers at the CLC have received accolades such as the Ministry of Education's Excellent Teacher Award for Chinese Education and the Fulbright Chinese Teaching Fellowship. President Kuo-En Chang, who previously served as the president of National Taiwan Normal University, places great importance on Chinese language education and recently established "hybrid classrooms" at the CLC to provide real-time interactive language teaching both online and offline.
Chinese Language Center Director I-Jung Lu emphasized that in the past few years, the number of students coming to Taiwan to learn Chinese has significantly declined due to the pandemic. However, a recent recovery with enrollment rebounding for students from the United States, Japan, and South Korea, and significant growth among students from Vietnam and Thailand is observed. Lu pointed out that Taiwan offers high value for tuition fees, and she believes that the number of students will soon return to pre-pandemic levels.
