The 2021 Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards (TCSA) were announced on November 17. This year, Tunghai University was granted with highest honor in Overall Sustainability Performance, Sustainability Report, and Single Topic Performance. Tunghai University President Mao-Jiun Wang, Vice President Chia-Chung Chan, Institutional Research Officer Shu-Ming Hsu, and Corporate Sustainability Influence Center Director Chia-Wei Hsu attended the ceremony to receive the awards.
The Sustainability Model University Award emphasizes the overall performance of universities in sustainable development, including the influence in governance, society, environment and partnerships. Tunghai University has won this top award for two consecutive years. The jury expressed high recognition for the efforts Tunghai put in connecting its academic strength with the society in accordance with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Besides winning the 2021 Sustainability Model University Award, Tunghai University has long been recognized with its sustainability efforts, including ranking number one among all private universities in Taiwan in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (2020 and 2021), winning the first prize of USR Outstanding Co-prosperity Proposal granted by the Global View Magazine in 2020, the Low-Carbon Sustainable Outstanding Contribution Award granted by Taichung City Government (2019, 2020, 2021), and five medals in 2021 Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards. This is the second time for Tunghai University to be recognized with the Sustainability Model University Award. It is a repeated affirmation on Tunghai's involvement and commitment to the sustainable development of Taiwan.
Tunghai University also won the Sustainability Report Platinum Prize due to focusing its sustainability efforts on "one university guarding one stream – from Dondaxi to Fazixi", “Saving energy while cutting carbon emission”, and “Building Circular Economy on campus”. The sustainability report demonstrates Tunghai’s emphasis on sustainable education and social responsibility issues, and reveals the future path and efforts of the overall sustainable development of the university.
In the single topic performance category, Tunghai University won a Social Co-prosperity Leadership Award. The evaluation focuses on how the organization develops a cooperative model of mutual benefit and co-prosperity between the organization and the society to create social benefits and influence from a shared value. Tunghai University is awarded for its perennial efforts in encouraging human interaction and social involvement of the elders.
Sustainable development is currently the biggest challenge for all mankind. Tunghai University breaks through the traditional academic boundary of university education by leading students into the community to gain insights of societal and environmental issues. The model university award means both affirmation and responsibility. We hope that the sustainability seeds germinated in school will grow into ideas, enthusiasm, and actions for a better tomorrow for the society.
