Tunghai University-News--THU Distinguished Chair Professors Jo-Shu Chang (張嘉修) and Wei-Hsin Chen (陳維新) Again Listed on Highly Cited Researchers Directory in 2021
According to Clarivate Analytics, the 2021 Highly Cited Researchers Directory identifies scholars whose papers receive top 1% number of citations among their peer groups in Web of Science, demonstrating significant academic influence on their peers.
Professor Jo-Shu Chang (張嘉修) obtained his Doctoral degree from the University of California, Irvine in 1993 and has been involved in biochemical engineering for nearly 30 years. In recent years, he has focused his research on microalgae biotechnology and circular economy. Prof. Chang has won numerous awards and honors internationally and is in a leading position in microalgae nitrogen fixation and circular economy technology. Many technologies developed by Prof. Chang have been put in actual industrial application.
Professor Chang considers it a great honor to be recognized as a highly cited scholar for the third time and thanks both National Cheng Kung University and Tunghai University for providing him with sufficient research resources. For a paper to be highly cited, the research topic has to be of international importance and the research work has to achieve prominent results. He hopes to integrate past research done at Tunghai with artificial intelligence technology, sustainability and circular economy research to raise the international visibility of Tunghai University.

Clarivate Analytics released the 2021 Directory of Highly Cited Researchers on November 17. Among the 6,600 scholars listed, 16 are from Taiwan.
Two THU Distinguished Chair Professors - Professor Jo-Shu Chang (張嘉修) and Professor Wei-Hsin Chen (陳維新) - are listed in the directory. Prof. Chang is THU Distinguished Chair Professor and Dean of the College of Engineering, Chair Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) and Visiting Professor at Kobe University (Kobe, Japan). Prof. Chen is THU Distinguished Chair Professor and Distinguished Professor in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Cheng Kung University. Both Professors have entered the list of highly cited researchers for years with high honor.

Professor Wei-Hsin Chen (陳維新) obtained his Doctoral degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from National Cheng Kung University in 1993. He has been involved in the energy field for nearly 30 years, specializing in biomass, hydrogen, clean energy, and green energy and fuel technology (such as clean coal technology, pulverized coal injection technology, carbon dioxide capture and utilization, cogeneration systems, iron and steel refining, wind power, and energy system.) Prof. Chen is one of the leading researchers in biomass technology.

Prof. Chen said that being listed as a highly cited scholar is a very high honor for the academic community and a great affirmation for himself. Considering energy and resources being two major environmental issues, his laboratory. is conducting research addressing green energy and environmental sustainability while incubating young talents that will make contribution to the future of the society. Prof. Chen has been a Distinguished Chair Professor of Tunghai University since 2019.
