With over 300 partner universities worldwide, Tunghai University offers our students with opportunities in overseas study, exchange, faculty led programs, 2+2/ 3+2 dual degree programs, and international intern programs to enhance student mobility and employment competitiveness. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Tunghai provides students with online courses of renowned international universities and the International College has invited students from USA to a study abroad program at Taichung.
The Department of Applied Physics has been offering online courses for nearly 10 years. Its Fundamental Physics Honor Course targets students with high learning motivations and provides a broad range of professional teaching and visionary courses. Well-performing freshmen students receive scholarships when finished with the online course. An open online course ‘edX’ has been set up in collaboration with the US Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The Fundamental Physics Honor Course, designed by Associate Professor Kwai-Kong Ng, combines the advantages of online and in-person courses. Students taking this course attend online classes offered by an international university and in-person classes offered on Tunghai campus. When all classes had to be changed to become online due to the pandemic in May 2021 at Tunghai, the students were better prepared for the learning style than students in other departments.
Chairman of the Dept. of Applied Physics, Prof. Shih-Sen Chien, says that a big advantage of online learning is that it can be carried out according to the individual learning pace of students to achieve differentiated learning. In the current semester, 15 freshman year students in the department completed an online course offered by Harvard University and earned the academic credits. The tuition fee was covered by the MIT Scholarship donated by alumnus Prof. Min Chen, a tenured professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Furthermore, two students at the Foreign Languages and Literature Department completed a SCIO online course offered by Oxford University and were each granted a certificate of completion. Tunghai University is breaking through the challenges of the education environment under the COVID-19 pandemic and leading our students to face a broader and diversifying world of learning.
