The curricula design and teaching, athlete selection/training/coaching, administrative supports and service, as well as volunteer service system in physical education at Tunghai University was recognized by the Sports Administration of the Ministry of Education. An Excellent Performance Award in Physical Education was granted to Tunghai on September 27, 2019. Director of the Department of Physical Education Shu-Chen Huang received the Award on behalf of Tunghai.
A tri-faceted design is the basis of the physical education at Tunghai University. Firstly, in the aspect of curricula and teaching, health and physical fitness are the focus for freshman year students while specialized theory and practical trainings are the core for the sophomore students. Physical performance being one of the graduation thresholds constantly reminds students that keeping physical fitness helps maintain good health and learning efficiency. Tunghai also organizes international conferences in physical education and sports events, publishes journals, as well as engages in University Social Responsibility (USR) programs.
Secondly, in the aspect of activities and competitions, regular annual events organized by the Dept. of Physical Education include university anniversary sports games, freshman basketball game, inter-departmental ball games (basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, tennis), alumni ball games (basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, tennis, softball), and faculty ball games. Besides these, Tunghai sports teams actively participate in various domestic and international sports competitions. In addition, Tunghai has hosted national university baseball league games for 5 consecutive years.
Thirdly, in the aspect of administration and service, taking the advantage of large land area for sports activities, quality sports grounds with excellent lighting are open in the evenings as well. A Tunghai Sports Park project (adding a multi-function building, covered ball fields, and second baseball field to the existing facilities) is under way. All facilities are open to university faculty, students, and nearby community residents.
Recognizing physical education as an important part of university education and a corner stone for national development, Tunghai takes responsibility in facilitating the health and vitality of our students, who in turn constitute a driving force for the future of the society.
