On April 26, the Luce Chapel of THU officially became a national monument. The director of the Cultural Assets Bureau of Ministry of Culture, Guo-Long Shi issued the National Cultural Heritage to THU president, Mao-Jiun Wang. On the same day, it was also Ieoh Ming Pei’s 102nd birthday, who is one of the chapel designers. All the teachers and students witnessed this historic moment.
On January 25, 2019, the Ministry of Culture held the 8th meeting of the 7th Review Conference of Historic Buildings. At the meeting, it was decided that “Luce Chapel” was a national monument. The chapel was completed in 1963 and was built by Ieoh Ming Pei and Chi Kwan Chen. It has been registered as a national monument only for its history of 56 years. It is the first modernist building designated as a national monument after the Second World War in Taiwan. Mr. Pei also regarded Luce Chapel as one of the most important classic works in his life. It is also the only national monument in his construction career that has been recognized and protected by the state as a cultural asset.
On April 26, the Luce Chapel of THU officially became a national monument.
The president of THU, Mao Jiun Wang said that the Luce Chapel has become a national monument through everyone's efforts, and on the 102nd birthday of Mr. Pei, we receive this certificate, which is of great significance. In addition, the joy of Mr. Pei’s 100th birthday was shared here two years ago and a joint prayer meeting was held. In September last year, the school and the pastor carefully held a commemorative concert and forum for Mr Henry Luce, and invited the great-grandchildren and Mrs. Henry R. Luce to participate. The students from THU said the Luce Chapel is special. THU’s students cherished the church and are willing to share it. Therefore, there’s a Sunday worship and a growth workshop for teachers, students, nearby residents or tourists. They can come to contemplate, meditate and pray.
The representative of the Cultural Assets Bureau of the Ministry of Culture, Guo-Long, Shi attended the award ceremony. In his speech, Mr. Shi said that the choice of the National Heritage Certificate today has three major factors, as it coincides with the architect Mr. Pei’s birthday who is also the first Chinese architect who won the Pritzker Prize. The second factor is that Taiwan joined the Docomomo Modern Building Conservation Association two or three years ago. Through the census, it found that the only one of the nearly 200 modern buildings in Taiwan has the value of a national monument, except for the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Luce Chapel is the only one. In addition to preserving the architecture of the 18th and 19th centuries, the Cultural Assets Bureau also paid attention to the modern architecture of the 20th century, the Luce Chapel is also a classic of modern architecture. Thanks to Tunghai University for its preservation of the chapel as a national monument and meaningful modern architecture. The third most important factor is that the Luce Chapel was designated as a municipal monument in September 2017, in less than two years ago. It is the only one of the 105 monuments in Taiwan, its value is precious and deeply recognized.
Hao-Xiu, Chiu, the director of the Department of Architecture of THU, introduced the characteristics of the church. The Luce Chapel is built with the shape of a thin-shelled double-curved surface. The height is nearly 20 meters, the width is about 30 meters, and the thinnest part of the outer wall is only 20 centimeters. It used avant-garde and unique construction method which has no pillars and no beams. In addition, the classics are in three aspects. First, the propagation path of modern Western architecture was introduced by Chinese architects such as Mr. Pei and Mr. Chen, who were directly educated by Bauhaus, and is the practice of modernist architecture in Taiwan. The second is the perfect interpretation of the oriental architectural style with the spirit and technology of Western modernist architecture. Third, contemporary architecture techniques such as fair-faced concrete and hyperbolic paraboloids have led to the promotion of Taiwan's construction technology. In the architectural profession, the theory and thoughts have a clear expression, and the combination of structural mechanics and spatial modeling is quite perfect. In the public's perception, people can feel the relationship between the rising curve and God. As well as the beautiful shape, it is one of the most successful buildings in Taiwan.
Luce Chapel is the spiritual fortress of THU, it was completed in 1963. The founder of Time -Life magazine, Mr. Henry R. Luce, in order to preach the gospel and commemorate his father, went to Christchurch University to donate money for construction. At the fiftieth anniversary of the chapel, it was selected by the Getty Foundation as one of the most preserved modern buildings of the twentieth century. Now it has been upgraded to a national monument, all teachers and students from the school are proud. The school also formed the Cultural Assets Preservation and Revitalization Planning Committee to assist in the preservation of cultural assets. On the occasion of being designated as a national monument, THU will follow the maintenance procedures of cultural assets preservation to maintain this cultural asset belonging to the important "image" value of Taiwan.
