Vice President of the Republic of China Chien-Jen Chen visits THU to share his experience and encourage the students
On the afternoon of May 2, the Student Council of Tunghai University invited Vice President Chien-Jen Chen to give a speech at the school. President Mao-JiunWang, Student Council PresidentYan-Yu Chen and the student representatives welcomed the him. Vice President Chen used the theme, "My Thoughts and Experience", to share the course of study, career and life experience. During the sharing, he answered the questions of the participants. Through the interactive communication with students, there was lively participation.
On behalf of the university, the President Wang gave the gift of a crystal chapel to Vice President Chen who has a Catholic faith, and said that the Luce Chapel was upgraded to a national monument, and it had great significance to choose to give a speech here. Vice President Chen is an internationally renowned top scholar and has won outstanding academic awards at home and abroad. He has rich academic experience and valuable life experience. He came to Tunghai University to share his thoughts and experiences with students. This sharing event encouraged students to have courage to challenge life.
In his speech, Vice President Chen talked about his childhood, and his parents' enlightened attitude of warmth and catholic trust. When he talked about becoming the youngest Taiwanese professor in Taiwan, his father used the illustration of the rice plant to teach him the importance of modesty. In the speech, he also shared about his disappointments and about taking public education exam four times.He quoted IsaacNewton, Marie Curie, Louis Pasteur, and the apostle Matthew to explain his own process of learning and seeking, to become a person who pursues dreams.
He also mentioned that in the professional field of public health, with the goal "based on Taiwan and leading the world", he urged himself to make some achievements. Vice President Chen said that although Taiwan is a small country, it has rich medical resources and technology, and ranks among the top in the global medical field. He encourages THU students to find their own character, persevere and work hard, have the heart of "wisdom" and "compassion", surpass themselves and serve others.
In the interaction with students, Vice President Chen responded carefully to students' questions about the withdrawal mechanism of the private school, Taiwan's changing international situation, and the interaction and experience of visiting the Pope. He also hopes that all colleges and universities can develop school characteristics and meet the needs of students with innovative field expertise and teaching methods. In addition, he encouraged the universities to actively recruit foreign students and promote international education.
The learning environment of THU has been diversified, and the student self-governing groups on campus have flourished. Yan-Yu Chen, president of the Student Council, said that the student union will actively play a bridge between students and the school, and look forward to establishing a good teacher-student interaction. He also hopes that through this event, the communication between the Vice President and students and faculty will be opened to bring different views to THU.
After the speech, Vice PresidentChen accompanied by the student representatives, visited the campus and learned about the living environment of the students. He also went to the Student Council office to care for the development of the student associations, and took a group photo with the students to wrap the event up.
