World Philosophy Day was initiated in 2002 by UNESCO to put emphasize on philosophical reflection in the entire world by opening up free and accessible spaces, with the objective of encouraging people to share their philosophical heritage and to open their minds to new ideas. World Philosophy Day was set on the third Thursday of November in every year, falling on November 19th this year. During the week THU Department of Philosophy launched a series of events on campus to celebrate this day. It was the first celebration campaign in Taiwan in response to the UN initiative.

Major events during the week included a feature speech, a make-up parade on campus, a vote for philosophical quotes and finally a party on the World Philosophy Day. The feature speech “Philosophical Explorations of Freedom of Speech” was given by Professor Kuang-Ming Cheng, Chair of department of philosophy at National Chengchi university. The reasons for supporting freedom of speech, limitation of the freedom and the argument on limiting the freedom of speech were discussed. The make-up parade turned the THU campus into a marketplace where philosophers such as Immanuel Kant wandered about. Throughout the week, the THU campus was decorated with celebrated dictums by the philosophers in order to embody the spirit of philosophy. The most philosophical quote chosen by the THU faculty and students was the Socratic paradox “I know one thing: that I know nothing”.
