The annual Tunghai Christmas concert has become the most eagerly awaited musical event by fans in the central region of Taiwan. As usual, concert tickets this year sold out on the first day of asking. To share with more fans the experience of the sensational event, a large-scale outdoor broadcast was set up to allow people to sit on the grass under the stars and enjoy the musical feast jointly performed by over one hundred musicians.
The concert was held on the birthday of Maestro Beethoven, December 17th. A total of 188 performers conducted by Professor Annie Chung provided the audience with an unforgettable year-end celebration. The performers included the Orchestra of Tunghai Music Department, the Tunghai Choir, the Orchestra of Tunghai University Music Preparatory School and the Cavalleria di Musica Orchestra. Outstanding alumni of Tunghai University soprano Dr. Yi-Lin Hsu, mezzo-soprano Pei-Chi Chen, tenor Wei-Han Tan and baritone Chan-Yu Yeh brought wonderful vocal solos. The program contained “Beethoven Symphony No. 9” and “Dvorak Serenades”. Both pieces are familiar to classic music fans. The Beethoven Symphony No. 9 (the Choral) was enlisted as “world cultural heritage of mankind” by the UNESCO in 2003.

Two local companies which were also classical music fans, Avertronics Inc. and Lai Jang-Liang Architect Office, sponsored the live outdoor broadcast. Performances in the Luce Memorial Chapel were projected simultaneously on its outer glazed tile surface, providing a spectacular visual and audio experience to the audience. The magnificent musical feast was also webcasted synchronously to share the festive event to the Tunghai alumni worldwide.
