The Department of Music recently held its annual Tunghai Opera performance to great appeal of the campus public. The program included Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, The Abduction from the Seraglio by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and The Secret Marriage by Domenico Cimarosa. In addition, the Tunghai Theater Club also performed the famus American musical, West Side Story, which was revised in accordance with Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Both performances were performed on January 6, 2018 at 7p.m. and on January 7, 2018 at 2p.m. in the theater of the department of Music.
Since 1985, Professor Si-Zhao Chen has been the director of these events, and Tunghai students and alumni, as well as famous singers in Taiwan, have cooperated to perform numerous plays, including Amahl and the Night Visitors by Gian Carlo Menotti, Thus Do They All, the Magic Flute, the Marriage of Figaro, The Impresario, Bastien and Bastienne by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Hansel and Grettel by Humperdinck, La Serva Padrona by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, The Bat by Johann Strauss, The Elixir of Love by Gaetano Donizetti, Sister Angelica by Giacomo Puccini, and The Mikado by Arthur Sullivan. Besides, Tunghai also had the opportunity to perform The Child and the Spells: A Lyric Fantasy in Two Parts by Maurice Ravel and Leonore, or The Triumph of Marital Love by Ludwig van Beethoven with National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra. Our Music Department has also been invited to perform in the National Theater and Concert Hall, the Taipei City Arts Promotion Office, and the Taichung Chung Shan Hall. On June 2, 2017, the Taichung Theater invited world-known tenor, Scott Piper, to lead a choir and orchestra with 140 performers to perform the annual project play: The Lady with the Camellias. The cooperation between students and professional musicians was highly praised and appreciated.
The Tunghai University Opera Ensemble revised the original lyrics into a Chinese version for the general public and the members cultivated their stage-performance techniques by continuous rehearsals and public performances. Plays performed in recent years include Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, and The Abduction from the Seraglio by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and The Secret Marriage by Domenico Cimarosa.
The first play performance of the M.A. Program in Performing Arts and Creativity & Design: West Side Story
After the foundation of the Tunghai University Musical Play Program, the students were invited by Silpakorn University to perform The King and I in Central Plaza in Bangkok. In addition to the international cooperation, they also held international public play performances for various festivals in Taiwan, including the Yilan International Children's folklore and folkgame Festival, the Xiluo Modern Art Festival, the Lukang Art Festival, and so on. In this manner, students were able to go beyond the traditional classroom setting and conduct public performances in many different venues.
In 2018, Tunghai University Opera performed the American musical West Side Story on January 6 and 7. The plot of the play was revised to make it match more closely the famous tragedy by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet. The play talks about the love between young people with antagonistic family backgrounds and how they try to overcome the obstacles, but failed in the end. Different from the exotic romance in the original version, the background of West Side Story now fits the lives of immigrants more closely, and combines the social reality and irony. It reflects the social problems of racism, teenage criminals and violence, and cultural gap in the post-war American society.
In addition to the faculties and students from the Graduate Institute of Performing Arts, students from the General Education Course, and the Digital Interactive Musical Theater (two branches: Acting and Theater Design Practice), also participated in the performances and the costume design. The performances, moreover, were directed by professors who have professional backgrounds in the performing arts, including Prof. Chi-Chang Tsai as stage director, Prof. Si-Zhao Chen as song and voice director, Prof. Zong-Kai Kuo as orchestra director, Prof. Huan-Syong Li as Art Coordinator, Prof. Hui-Hsuan Hsu as digital images Designer, and Prof. Hong-Fu Lee and Prof. Hsiu-Ru Yen as dance directors. Prof. Ming-Chun Liao instructed students in Theater Design Practice, that is the character-design and make-up included.
The main style of the costumes was what may be called old-school in order to create an enthusiastic retro rock style language. With the interactive cooperation of stage direction, music performance, theater design practice, and costume design, hundreds of students and faculty members created the classical musical play West Side Story. Furthermore, the show was free and the audience could enjoy the show by showing the poster of West Side Story on their mobile devices as their entrance tickets.
