Exchanges and communications between economical, academic, and industrial sectors have become more and more active and frequent. Among the subjects which are of concern in cross-strait relations, environmental quality problems are key, especially regarding air pollution. Besides, under the influence of atmospheric transmission and global climate change, large-scale air pollution has become a crisis that cannot be ignored. As economic activities and urban development make fast-paced progress, altogether with global warming, man-made air pollution and natural sandstorms often worsen the air quality around the world. Atmospheric particulate matters, which are microscopic solid or liquid matter suspended in Earth's atmosphere, are the key factors affecting visibility and are also the deadliest in terms of carrying toxic substances. Atmospheric particulates are severe threats to environmental quality and the health of people all around the world. Therefore, professionals and specialists in the field of Aerosol Research are actively searching for opportunities to collaborate and create strategies to improve healthcare.
Tunghai’s Department of Environmental Science and Engineering and the Taiwan Association for Aerosol Research (TAAR) co-organized the 15th Cross-Straits Aerosol Research Conference from September 6 to 12, 2017, and the 24th International Conference on Aerosol Science and Technology: the 2017 Forum on Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5) and Climate Change from September 8 to 9. Both conferences invited over 500 internationally and regionally well-known representatives, researchers, industry specialists, governors, and participants in the field of Aerosol Research. Through keynote speeches, paper submissions, verbal reports, poster displays, and on-site exchanges regarding the characteristics, sources, monitor, impacts, and management of global and regional air pollution, the conferences provided a platform for advanced discussion and collaborative foundations.
President Moo-Been Chang of Taiwan Association for Aerosol Research
In his opening speech, President Moo-Been Chang pointed out that in addition to the usual keynote speeches, oral and poster presentations, PM2.5 Forum, and industry visits, the conference this year also included a Student Thesis Competition, which was worth looking forward to. He hoped that after the conference, the aerosol research community in Taiwan would largely benefit from the discussions and contribute more to air quality improvement, healthcare, and the fight against global warming.
Deputy Minister Tzi-Chin Chang Environmental Protection Administration Executive Yuan
Deputy Minister Tzi-Chin Chang of the Environmental Protection Administration Executive Yuan pointed out that recently, more and more people started to question the reason why the air pollution in Taiwan is getting worse. From the standpoint of the Pollutant Standards lndex (PSI), long-term air quality monitoring data suggest that the air pollution problem in Taiwan has actually improved. However, after 2012 when the air pollution standards were adjusted to include PM2.5, the related data of air quality has worsened. Since the sources and formation of PM2.5 are very complicated, the government hoped that the conference could help provide insights to help policy-making and implementing.
President Mao-Jiun Wang delivering a speech
In his speech, Tunghai President Mao-Jiun Wang introduced the history of Tunghai University and its importance to Taichung City as the city’s green lungs. Most of the campus plans are aiming to reduce carbon emission, such as electronic shuttle buses, annual tree-planting week, receiving the ISO 14001 environment management system acknowledgement, and organizing hackathons regarding air pollution problems. He then especially thanked the Taiwan Association of Aerosol Research for it contribution in organizing such conferences in Tunghai University.
The conferences this year specially invited Deputy Minister Tzi-Chin Chang Director Hung-Teh Tsai Environmental Protection Administration Executive Yuan as well as professionals and scholars in the field of PM2.5 management and climate change to deliver keynote speeches. We hope that through the collaboration and communication between the government, the school, and the industry, all can gain better insights into the issues and problems of climate change and pollution.
