On September 17, the inaugural worship ceremony of Pastor David Clotfelter as Tunghai’s pastor took place at Luce Chapel at 3pm. After the worship choir performance, Tunghai’s Chariman Chi-Hong Tseng preached under the topic, “Pour One’s Heart, Serve One’s Duty.” Tunghai’s President Mao-Jiun Wang, Pastor Hsiang-Hsiu Hsiao, and Pastor Jin-Tai Lin all gave their blessings. The Tunghai church choir and the Luce choir performed together while the group of pastors prayed in lead. The ceremony was warm and holy.
Pastor Clotfelter taught at Tunghai’s Department of Foreign Languages and Literature from 1980 to 1983. After returning to the United States, he completed his Master and Doctoral degrees in Fuller Theological Seminary and Claremont Graduate University. He served as the Senior Pastor in Northridge community church in Los Angeles for almost 30 years. His wife, Wen-Chi Pang, is also an alumna of Tunghai’s Department of Foreign Languages and Literature. She became a Christian while studying at Tunghai, growing and serving in Christ with Tunghai’s President Mao-Jiun Wang, Pastor Hsiang-Hsiu Hsiao, Pastor Jin-Tai Lin, and Abram Shen, the Brother in the students’ group at church. By the encouragement of these alumni, the Clotfelters were able to return to their home university to serve as professors and pastors.
In his speech, Pastor Clotfelter shared: Our school should provide a path of exploration for key concepts and values that would matter the most in life. Teachers and students alike should be able to think, ask, search, and challenge freely the great philosophical traditions in the world. I believe deeply in the declaration of the founding pioneers of the school, that “The universe and all of it belongs to God. Without Him, our lives and the world we live in would not be rightful and clear. The rejection towards Him would block our search for truth.” This being my vision of education, I will devote all that I can offer.
