Tunghai’s four-day freshmen orientation culminated in a final evening, the so called “Hope Night”, on September 15. The purpose of this event was to encourage students to find their own hopes and goals for their four years at Tunghai. While the students cheered with joy and hope, the event came to a perfect ending.
As instructed by the MC, students first inflated colorful balloons and sent them flying in many directions. Then, all of them lit up the flying balloons with their cell phones, creating a grand scene. The balloons of different colors represented students’ diverse abilities and dreams that will shine on them throughout their lives.
Hope Night developed an analogy with Dorothy the little girl with her scarecrow, lion, and tin man partners in the story of the Land of Oz. They all had different goals and desires, yet showed the same positive attitudes and courage while facing challenges and the unknown future. Teamwork is especially important when it comes to achieving goals. Learning to be friends with different people and coping with different backgrounds and personalities will help one grow in love and companionship.
Sixty-one years following Tunghai University’s founding, the campus has changed a lot, but the university’s dedication to educating and cultivating people has remained the same. The student volunteers and Alpha Leaders who were responsible for organizing and running the four-day freshmen orientation are proof to Tunghai’s values. The seniors produced a video recording the four-day activities, as well as shot live interviews the day when freshmen moved into the dorms.
According to Tunghai Vice President Li-Chih Wang, who entered Tunghai forty years ago, Tunghai, being a Christian University, shares the love of God with students. Tunghai, moreover, definitely offers students a window to the wider world and the sincerest love and care.
Tunghai’s vision throughout its history has been to innovate upon its strong foundation in the humanities. The school aims to cultivate students to develop innovative minds, to become global citizens, and to be leaders in serving society.
Students studying in Tunghai are expected to acquire two languages, three learnings, and four sustainabilities. They should acquire a foreign language and learn coding; they should develop Liberal Arts learning, interdisciplinary learning, and digital learning; and finally, they should pursue sustainability regarding the society, economics, ecosystem, and culture. In this manner, students will learn to contribute to the society and make a difference.
Finally, Vice President Wang stated that it was only when you know how to give, that you will know what is love, and that this was his blessing for the freshmen.
