To promote tourism and cultural creativity in Guizhou, China, the first Cross-Straits Culture and Tourism Product Design Competition was held from August 10 to 20, 2017. Eighty young cultural designers from both Guizhou and Taiwan were invited to participate in the 10-day competition focusing on Guizhou’s characteristics and history. In the end, Yu-Lun Cheung from Tunghai’s Department of Fine Arts won the first prize with his work, “Hometown of Mother Butterfly.”
The competition was carried out in three categories: traditional handcrafted artwork display, cultural design, and Guizhou cultural exploration. During the process of competition, eighty young designers from Guizhou and Taiwan allied in teams, presenting fifty-seven personal pieces and nine team submissions, including lifestyle products, creative cultural handcrafts, and food specialties.

As Cheung stated, although he was only in Guizhou for ten days, he had the opportunity to experience the local culture, but he faced two challenges in the competition. First, he only had four days for intensive planning and work implementation. Second, the competition focused on more than the artwork itself and required designers to think about transforming traditional handcrafts into popular tourism and culture products. He presented two art pieces in total for the competition. One was a blue batik hanging scroll about mountains and rivers inspired by the karst topography in Guizhou. Another was a handmade scarf inspired by the Miao people’s origin folktale about Mother Butterflies and their traditional totem. From his first arrival in Guizhou, his cultural experiences with the Miao people in their natural landscapes and different values inspired him greatly and increased his great love tof the nature, which became his major inspiration.
