The Annual Physics Education Joint Conference took place from August 24 to 26 at the Tunghai University Mao-Bang Hall. It was co-hosted by the Physics Education Society of Taiwan, Tunghai’s Department of Applied Physics, and the General High School Physics Education Center. This year, 250 teachers from the physics and science field sattended the conference and discussed physics education today, as well as new directions and methods for physics education for the new generation.
On the first day of the conference, Chairman Wei-Qing Hong of the Physics Education Society Taiwan, Assistant Director-General Shu-Yi Wang of the Education Bureau of the Taichung City Government, Director Tsai-Ku Liao of the Taichung First Senior High School, and Director Jin-Xia Lin of the Education Bureau of the Taichung City Government attended the opening ceremony and a poster presentation workshop.
With the implementation of the 108 Education Guidelines, physics classes have experienced a decrease in teaching hours as well as a change in course purposes. Now the guidelines emphasize cultivating the students’ interest in physics. These guidelines not only impact current physics education practices in middle and high schools, but also affect the overall quality of science education in universities. The conference this year especially focused on such changes, allowing middle and high school teachers to exchange thoughts with university professors. By doing so, they could establish a mutual expectation and understanding as to raising the overall knowledge of physics of the Taiwanese people.

According to Tunghai Vice President Li-Chih Wang, the new education guidelines would come into full operation in 2019. Thus, the conference served a very useful purpose. The Tunghai Department of Applied Physics, moreover, has a strong tradition in the teaching of Physics and he hoped that the two-day conference could establish a new collaboration mechanism between high school teachers and University faculty.
Dean Ding-Yah Yang of the College of Science of Tunghai University next welcomed all conference participants, and suggested that, in addition to engaging with the academic content of the conference, they also take some time to experience the beautiful campus. He further thanked the teachers and students of the Physics Department for their hard work as conference organizers.
The conference included activities that aimed to help raise educational quality, including six physics DIY workshops and nine presentation and education workshops. Through the sharing of curriculum design and teaching materials, teachers were exposed to various resources that could be used for the “Exploration and Practice” section of the future guidelines. Additionally, a number of Education workers presented their research papers, shared their findings and experiences regarding education theory, curriculum design and preparation, and more. This conference certainly inspires and stimulates energy for the physics education field in Taiwan.
