Tunghai’s four-day freshmen orientation took place from September 12 to 15. The theme of the event was “Sharing Tunghai Through Song” and the organizers designed a series of activities that combined technology and people. The activities included the Tunghai Family Gathering, motivational speeches, club fairs, a University Song Contest, fire drill, Hope Night, the Line Bot Campus Info Service, a QR Code campus view, and more.
Community living and learning has been an important Tunghai tradition since the University’s establishment. In addition to professional teaching, many professors are also happy to invite students into their homes. This year, this tradition continued as 46 faculty members opened their doors to students, including the University President, the Dean of the Office of Student Affairs, and some foreign teachers. They hosted 80 Family Gatherings, strengthening bonds between teachers and students during the four-day orientation.
Freshmen Orientation Ceremony

The four-day freshmen orientation was led by the alpha leaders, who guide freshmen to
become familiar with Tunghai by means of a series of exploration games and activities on campus.
According to President Mao-Jiun Wang, 60 years since its foundation, Tunghai has stayed true to its educational ideals. From its campus infrastructure to its policies, Tunghai always focuses on the “human” factor. It is hoped that all students who graduate from Tunghai have the heart of a “servant”, that is, they love, care, and focus on service; and they also acquire knowledge, wisdom, and courage. President Wang further shared some stories from his years as a student during the orientation ceremony. Some professors and other speakers also shared similar stories from their years as students.

The motivational speech session invited a number of speakers from different backgrounds to share their passion and projects. These included: Bo-Wei Huang, who still loves life despite an accident that left him with 80% burns all over his body and took away his legs and right arm; reporter Fu-Nien Tsiao, who travelled around the world in 361 days; Chung-Wei Gan, who sees lights in darkness; Hsin-Ru Ho, who is a wheelchair dancer; and famous tourism and restaurant manager Patrick Su. They were all able to reap what they sow because they endured hardships and took on many challenges along the way.
During the orientation ceremony, students re-composed the 60-year old Tunghai University song into jazz and rap versions, combining traditional with contemporary elements. They also performed a stage play adapted from songs of the 1990s. The entire activity, thus, came together with the help of 300 teachers and student volunteers.

In his speech, Dean Winston Lo of Student Affairs said that the lyrics of the university song perfectly depict the spirit of Tunghai and that Tunghai hopes to pass on this spirit to students during the orientation. Tunghai University has also been known for many years for its international environment, and this year, Tunghai was appointed as the organizer of the Indonesia Taiwan Education Center. A press conference was held to mark the occasion and students from Indonesia and Brazil, as well as Vice President Sri Imeiwaty from STKIP PGRI WEST SUMATERA in Indonesia, also participated. The two Brazilian students major in International Trade and Chinese Literature respectively. They were both impressed by Tunghai’s green campus and excited about learning a second language.
The most special aspect of this year’s orientation was the use of the “Tunghai Line Bot.” According to Director Chao-Tung Yang of the Computer Center, the Tunghai Line Bot, aims to deliver campus information to the 3517 freshmen using new interactive technologies. The services include messaging, viewing latest news of Tunghai, and campus touring. In the information feature, after verifying their identification number, class schedules, dormitory details, and related information would be provided automatically. Besides, students can ask questions simply by sending messages. The Line bot would create a list of commonly asked questions and immediately provide a programmed answer.
