As big data technology develops rapidly; traditional statistics is facing new challenges. Exploring new statistical theories and applications become an urgent issue. The Cross-Strait Application Statistics Seminar was initiated in 2005. Each year, universities of each side take turns to organize the event. The year 2017 marks the 12th organization of the seminar, hosted by Tunghai University.
Tunghai President Mao-Jiun Wang and Dean Hsiou-Wei (William) Lin of the College of Management gave opening speeches, addressing topics on innovation and changes. The seminar this year invited 21 scholars and professionals to participate, including Dean Ying-Mei Xu of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, Dean Ding-Ping Liu of Henan University of Economics and Law, Professor Jin-Guo Gong of Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, and representatives from other six Chinese universities. There were about 100 scholars and students in total.
The seminar this year included two keynote speeches. The first speaker, Prof. Fu-Lin Zhou of Henan University of Economics and Law, talked about the “Statistical Definition of Family Types in Demographic Census.” He especially focused on discussing family structure research and proposed improvements to the current research methods. The second speech topic was “Joint regression analysis of marginal quantile and quantile association in longitudinal studies with application to adolescent body mass index data,” delivered by Researcher Yi-Hau Chen from the Institute of Statistical Science, Academia Sinica. He proposed suggestions to joint regression analysis regarding data research. The seminar had in total 16 sessions with over 50 papers presentations. Contents cover big data, econometric, mathematical statistics, industrial statistics, biological statistics, governmental statistics, application statistics, and agricultural statistics. Through the academic exchange, scholars and researchers from Taiwan and China were able to share and discuss research results and to brainstorm for more innovation.
The organization of the seminar has strengthened the academic communication on application statistics between Taiwan and China, raising the quality and capacity of research. Facing the ever-changing future and competition, Taiwan and China together will respond with innovative thinking and create a new future.
