The Department of Music of Tunghai University has invited the internationally famous tenor, Scott Piper, to teach and perform in Taiwan. On May 6, 7, 26, and 27, Piper will be holding four public forums and master classes. Contents include the professional expectation for auditions rehearsals and collaborations, comparison and contrast of technic in classical and popular singings. Dr. Piper is a lirico spinto. His rich, resonant voice and charismatic stage presence has established him as an opera's romantic leading man, performing in Tosca, Carmen, Madama Butterfly, Cavalleria Rusticana, Turandot, Norma, Otello, Aïda, Pagliacci, Rigoletto, Vanessa, La Bohème, Lucia di Lammermoor, Faust, I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Manon Lescaut, Jenůfa, and more. His artistry has been heard throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia. He also appears as Alfredo in the DVD of Franco Zeffirelli’s production of La traviata, conducted by Placido Domingo and filmed in Busseto, home to Giuseppe Verdi. Currently, besides continuing a career in singing, he also teaches in University of Michigan, USA.

"Breaking Through Cocoons: From the Practice Room to the Stage - 2017 Tunghai International Music Seminar” will be held on May 13. The Tunghai Music Department has always strived to raise the domestic music literacy and to open opportunities of further trainings for local music teachers. To promote art and cultural exchanges and create better music atmospheres, the Department organizes regular events and seminars throughout each year, inviting internationally renowned scholars and professionals to conduct workshops and forums. The Department takes on the mission of community education, encouraging the society to expose broader and deeper to fine arts.
The seminar will study the students’ development process and stage ability from initial practices to eventual stage performance. There will be paper presentations on practical topics including “Practice First: The Science of Playing Piano,” “The Soul of Piano: Discussion on Piano Pedals,” “The Art of Piano Fingering, Bernstein Young People’s Concert: Topics, Tracks, and Treatise,” “How to Live with Performance Anxiety,” “From A Performer’s Perspective: Acoustics in Concert Halls.” Piper will present a solo recital at the seminar. We believe that the seminar will inspire participating students in terms of music appreciation and knowledge.
