The internationally renowned architecture master Ieoh-Ming Pei celebrated his 100th birthday on April 26, 2017. The global architecture community paid its respect to him. Tunghai Chairman of the Board Mr. Chi-Hong Tseng and President Mao-Jiun Wang flew to New York last August to thank him for designing of the Luce Chapel and for his contribution to Tunghai University.
Ieoh-Ming Pei, commonly known as I. M. Pei, is a Chinese-American architect born in Guangzhou, China. He headed to the United States to study architecture at the age of 18, receiving a bachelor degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a master's degree in architecture from Harvard University. Pei has won a wide variety of prizes and awards in the field of architecture, including the AIA Gold Medal in 1979, La Grande Médaille d'Or in 1981, and the Pritzker Prize in 1983, which made him the first Chinese-American architect to receive a Pritzker Prize. This year, he was honored with the “You Bring Charm to the World Award” granted by Beijing.

In 1953, when the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia decided to establish a university in Taiwan, they invited Pei, together with two architects Chao-Kang Chang and Chi-Kwan Chen, to design the campus. The campus landmark, the Luce Memorial Chapel, was designed by Pei and Chi-Kwan Chen and was completed on November 2, 1963. It was donated by Mr. Henry R. Luce, the founder of the American magazines TIMES and LIFE, to spread gospel and to commemorate his father, Pastor Henry W. Luce. Because of its unique architecture features, the Luce Chapel was granted by the Getty Foundation in 2014 through its “Keeping It Modern” initiative – one that focuses on supporting model projects for the conservation of modern architecture.
Besides the Luce Chapel, Pei has created countless classic, timeless designs, including the glass pyramid in front of the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, the Hyatt Regency in Suzhou China, and Miho Museum in Kyoto Japan.
Tunghai President Mao-Jiun Wang recalled seeing a picture of the Luce Chapel hung on the wall of Mr. Pei’s office, demonstrating Pei’s regard to this piece of work. For the visit, Tunghai University prepared a lazurite model of the Luce Chapel and a glaze-tile painting as gifts to Master Pei. Additionally, Tunghai’s Department of Architecture is going to provide a new course “The Classics: Exploring Modernism of I. M. Pei” in the next semester, carrying on his mastery and educating more young talents.
