Tunghai University is a school of forest. Its education spirit has always been aligned with the Chinese saying, “It takes ten years to grow trees, but a hundred years to rear people.” In 2017, we continue to plant down the seeds of hope, starting the tree-planting donation campaign to support our care for trees, the green campus, flat roads, and jogging routes as well as leisure facilities in the surrounding areas.

The tree-planting week of this year was organized by the Tunghai Alumni Association and Tunghai University Resources Development Committee, while inviting the Taichung City government, local branches of the alumni association, EMBA Alumni Association, EMBA Student Association, Enterprise Elite Association, the Affiliated Experimental High School of Tunghai University, Tunghai Placement and Alumni Office, Tunghai General Affairs Office, and the Tunghai University Endowment Fund for Academic Advancement (TEFA) as co-organizers. On the opening day, Deputy Director-General Liu of the Education Bureau of Taichung City Government, Deputy Director-General Zhang of the Construction Bureau, Secretary-General Wang of the Agriculture Bureau, poet master Chou-Yu Cheng, as well as Chairman Huang of the Tunghai Alumni Association, Chairman Chen of the EMBA Alumni Association, Chief Executive Officer Yang of the EMBA Student Association, Taichung City Representative Parents Association, Mr. Chun-Chi Chen of the Tunghai Alumni Association Hong Kong and other honorable guests attended the event.

As Tunghai President Mao-Jiun Wang said, the tree-planting campaign is a tradition of Tunghai. We will continue to decrease carbon in the environment and to be Taichung’s green lungs. Besides stating Tunghai’s value towards environmental and ecological protection and sustainable development, the event also resonated with the green vision of the mayor of Taichung. Last year, the school introduced electric buses as our new campus transportation tools, transformed leaves into organic fertilizers, installed smart electricity meters, and implemented an energy monitor and management mechanism. These efforts made Tunghai a winner of the “Low-Carbon City Outstanding Contribution Award” from the Taichung City Government. President Wang thanked the city government and alumni for their support. According to Deputy Director-General Liu of the Education Bureau of the Taichung City Government again promised the support from the government for Tunghai’s mid- and long-term plans in tree-planting.
Among the guests, a class of students from Minnan Normal University China who were studying in the International Business Department attracted special attentions. The students said that they participated in the event to show their appreciation to Tunghai University and to mark the friendship between the two universities, while leaving themselves a memorable story in Taiwan - one tree planted, invaluable love rooted.
