Ching-Wei Huang, student of Tunghai University Sports Recreation and Health Management Program, participated in and received the gold medal of the 2016 Japan Design Invention Expo (JDIE). The goal of the Expo is for the interchange of ideas and views among students, so the participants are students of all levels. Competing categories are not limited to inventions or designs, but also include art, technology or performance. One unique feature of the Expo is that participants can present their works in any form they choose.

Huang’s design idea originates from emergency needs in people’s daily lives. During his high school years, he noticed how frequent drowning accidents happened in Taiwan. He designed a multi-functional life vest equipped with a warming feature, LED lights, and GPS system as well as a life-saving wristband that could be inflated automatically. These two life-saving gadgets were both awarded the gold medal by the 2015 British Innovation Award.
This time, his submission to the JDIE is a fire accident temperature alarm, which can be installed onto door knobs. When a fire accident happened, the device detects the environmental temperature and sound off a warning alarm. Considering the importance of fire prevention in general households, this product will definitely become useful.

Director Shu-Chen Huang of the Tunghai SRHM program appraised Huang of his creative gifts. His invention of the GPS-integrated life vests and life-saving wristbands, once become available on the market, will make huge contributions to the fields of sports and recreation and add on to the practical applications of the Sports Recreation and Health Management Program.
Dean Wen-Dee Chiang of the Colleges of Agriculture also pointed out that Tunghai’s SRHM Program has started to show its potentials and achievements only three years after being founded. Students’ talents and creativities will be the strong forces behind the program’s academic and industrial promotion.
