On November 21, the Taichung Low Carbon City Promotion Office announced winners of the 2nd Taichung Low Carbon City Outstanding Contributor Award. Mayor Chia-Lung Lin granted awards to Tunghai University, China Medical University Hospital, and other eight winners. The award was to encourage the public to put more effort into eliminating carbon usage and emission in order to improve the city’s living environment.
CEO Chung-Den Huang of the Low Carbon Office pointed out that there were fifteen organizations and six individuals awarded this time, including outstanding contributors in various professions in Taichung. They have set up great examples in carbon reduction through planting, energy education, environmental education, hospital and campus carbon reduction, green energy development, environment monitoring, smart green buildings, public transportation system establishment, and more. In the future, the city government would invite winners to be Carbon Reduction Ambassadors to engage in public campaigns and educational promotions.
According to Tunghai President Mao-Jiun Wang, 80% of the Tunghai campus is covered by greens and trees. It not only beautified the campus and enriched the ecosystem, but also cultivated a strong sense of humanities and enlightened attention to environmental sustainability. Tunghai maintains the tradition of planting trees every year in order to for the campus to serve as the green lung of the city. On campus, there are also various carbon reduction devices that monitor energy consumption in all areas. The promotion of campus electric buses is one example. Tunghai has been doing its best to reduce carbon usage and emission, while aiming to drive its over 20,000 faculty members and students to a deeper understanding and practice of environmental protection.
