On November 12, 2016, Tunghai University Placement and Alumni Office and the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering held an industry mentor ceremony. The official ceremony marked the start to learning from industry mentors, providing a smoother path for students in entering a career.
The 2016 Tunghai University Mentorship program continued the traditions of inviting outstanding alumni from various industrial sectors to serve as mentors to students. The program connects and prepares Tunghai students to join the society. Contents of the program are decided based on discussions between mentors and students. The program focuses on the concept of “teach by words, practice by hands” to cultivate academically multi-disciplinary capabilities. It also bonds alumni and students closer to one another, encouraging experience-sharing and caring.
Tunghai Vice President Cheng-Tung Lin pointed out that the industry mentorship program exposes the students to the society, provides them with career opportunities, and offers great advice with the help and experiences of the industry mentors. VP Lin hoped the students would prepare themselves with a positive attitude, taking the initiative to plan and organize for the future. He also pled for the industry mentors to stay patient and empathetic when facing students who lack confidence in themselves.
Dean I-Kuan Yang of the College of Engineering anticipated the mentorship program to become a cycle of inspiration with which students accept and outlive the alumni’s spirits. He encouraged participants to pass on the elite values of Tunghai. Deputy Director Chia-Hsin Tsai of the Placement and Alumni Office believed that the mentorship program provided a platform for knowledge exchange as well as relationship establishment. She hoped the participating students would stay proactive, enthusiastic, and positive when learning from the seniors’ wisdom and experiences.
Director Yesong Ku of the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering thanked the department’s alumni for voluntarily assisting for the development of the department and implementing the industry mentorship program. With the strong support from the alumni, the students would not only have role models to live up to but also become inspired to develop their potentials and strengths. Ultimately, the program should help sharpen the students’ socializing ability and accompany them throughout the years to come in their lives.
According to one of the industry mentors, James Chu (27th Class of the Department of CME), the group of mentors will take a share-and-guide approach to lead the students with their experiences and connections. They aim to assist the students in shortening the gap between each individual and career or further education, in building up confidence, and in choosing the right path. Another mentor, Thomas Change (16th Class of the Department of CME) urged the students to look further into the future and plan ahead for their way to success.
At the end of the ceremony, students’ representative, Jing-Min Zhuo, read out the mentorship declaration and pledge for the participation of the program. Mentees then respectively practiced the mentorship ritual to their mentors one-by-one. By expressing their dedication to learn from the seniors through the mentorship ritual, they also presented the greatest gratitude towards the industry mentors.
