Outstanding Alumnus of Tunghai and Academician of Academia Sinica Dr. Chung-I Wu gave a speech on the topic “Tigers eat rabbits and genes regulate other genes: How ecosystems and gene networks maintain their stability?” at the Department of Life Science on October 31 to share the latest research results in the field.
Prof. Wu mentioned that although topics on the cell, molecular and gene expression control have been widely discussed, the inter-relationship and evolution among them are not yet clear. He addressed the issue from two different approaches of scientific research – reductionism and the fallacy. From a reductionist point of view, biological phenomena are observed at a macromolecular level down to interactions among cell environments and the construction of surrounding molecules. During the research, the fallacy of different conclusions derived from macro approach and micro approach must be considered.
Prof. Wu’s stringent scientific logics and mindset set a role model for the Tunghai students to follow. He emphasized the importance of learning from the process of research besides from the result. The speech was comprehensible for the audience to gain knowledge of Prof. Wu’s research and learning results as well as inspiring for the students to pursue higher levels of study and research.
Prof. Cung-I Wu graduated from the 18th class of Department of Life Science of Tunghai University before he obtained a PhD degree from the department of Genetics of British Colombia University, Canada. He was a researcher and teacher at University of Texas Houston Campus, Wisconsin University – Madison, and Rochester University and had been the chairman of the Ecology and Evolution Department at the Division of Biological Sciences of University of Chicago for 8 years. In 2004, he became Academician of Academia Sinica. Prof. Wu is currently a professor of Ecology and Evolution at University of Chicago and the head of Beijing Institute of Genomics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
