Tunghai Department of Architecture (DoA) has been keenly increasing the quality of its overall education in recent years. It internationalizes its academic training by international exchange programs, overseas teaching, international professional internships, international forums, and other educational activities. The effort not only broadens students’ perspectives and enhances their confidence, but also increases the number of applications to overseas masters’ programs. This year, a total of fifteen alumni received offers from outstanding graduate schools in both Europe and the United States.
The students are respectively accepted by Harvard Graduate School of Design; Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation; College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan; Parsons School of Design in New York; Pratt Institute in New York; Southern California Institute of Architecture; Bartlett School of Architecture in London; London Architecture Association; Denmark Aarhus School of Architecture; Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden; University of Leuven in Belgium; and other globally recognized architecture or design schools. It is clear that the Tunghai Department of Architecture is a leading institution of architecture education in Asia and is recognized by top universities worldwide.
The department Chair, Prof. Hao-Hsiu Chiu, says that professors of the department devote high passion and concentration on cultivating both students’ design profession and humanity critical thinking. There are three levels of focuses. The first is the “idealistic characteristics” which is simultaneously critical and poetic, questioning the status quo while imagining possible changes. The second is the “care and practice” to social public causes. The third and final is the “practical innovation” towards the system of modern architecture knowledge. These characteristics allow the students to become more than architecture professionals, but design integrating leaders who are able to think broadly and act keenly. In terms of education, Professor Hao-Hsiu Chiu believes it the most important and proper to provide a stage for the younger generation to perform to their maximum potentials. The society will only spawn endless creativity when the younger generation’s passion and motivation are encouraged. The stage in question is in Taiwan, and also in the world. .
Overseas Education
The DoA values the extent of globalization on professional and liberal arts educations. To increase students’ understanding to the history of western architecture, since 2006, the department has been collaborating with Cornell University from the United States in organizing a design workshop - “Tunghai Architecture in Rome.” The workshop takes students to Rome, Italy for a one-month study program taught by local archaeologists and architects. Coming to its tenth year, the summer study program has become the most popular course program of the department.
Besides the program in Rome, professors of the Department also lead groups of students from all grades to outstanding schools in Asia and Europe to better widen students’ global perspectives and promote internationally multi-disciplinary learning. For example, the DoA works with the Department of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Milan in Italy to hold design workshops at the Venice Biennale of Architecture and the Taiwan Pavilion at Expo Milano. Other schools which have collaborated with the Tunghai DoA include Yokohama Graduate School of Architecture in Japan, Department of Architecture of National University of Singapore, Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies of Mumbai University, Department of Architecture of Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, Department of Architecture of Silpakorn University in Thailand, KU Leuven in Belgium, Department of Architecture of The University of Hong Kong, Konkuk University in Korea, Department of Architecture of Kunming University of Science and Technology in China, and more.
International Exchange Students
To broaden students’ understanding and perspectives to Asian architecture, the DoA has also signed exchange agreements with notable Asian universities. So far, the department is in collaboration with National University of Singapore, Thailand Chulalongkorn University, Thailand Silpakorn University, Mumbai University KRVIA, Malaysia Tunku Abdul Rahman University, and more. Starting from 2013, the department goes on to form a partnership with European universities, including Spain San Pablo CEU University, Italy Polytechnic University of Milan, and now in-progress Italy Cafoscari University of Venice. Through one semester of studying in exotic environments and being exposed directly to a diversity of cultures and educations, students are able to grow both academically and spiritually to a great extent.
International Professional Internships
Besides attending sister universities as exchange students, students are also able to learn professional application by participating in global internship programs. The Tunghai DoA encourages students to join summer internship opportunities globally by providing various overseas internship scholarships. Students can choose their preferred locations of internships from a pool of various companies: 10 architecture firms in Tokyo, 4 design consultancy companies in Shanghai, 4 architecture design companies in Beijing, and outstanding firms or companies in New York, Oakland, Netherlands, London, Münster, Bari in Italy, Copenhagen, Lausanne, Warszawa, and many more. These include some of the most reputable companies such as Pritzker Architecture Prize winner Sejima And Nishizawa And Associates from Japan, MVRVD from the Netherlands, and Cook Robotham Architectural Bureau from London.
All students who participated in the internship programs must return to the department for an experience sharing event.
International Architecture Forums
For many years, the “Tunghai Architecture Forum Fund” accepts donations from alumni and invites reputable professors and architects from abroad to Taiwan for speeches, conferences, and workshops. Famous invited professionals include Dr. Stanley T. Allen, Dean of the School of Architecture of Princeton University; Japanese architect Toyo Ito; Dr. Jonathan Hill, Director of Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London; British architect Cecil Balmond; and British architect Ken Yeang. In the global forum of spring 2015, Tunghai DoA welcomed young architects of the new generation such as Pezo Mauricio and Sofia von Ellrichshausen from the awarded Pezo von Ellrichsausen, Yashar Hanstad from the awarded TYIN Tegnestue Architects, Jenny Sabin from Cornell University and Sabin Design Studio, and more. The forums aim to cover both the eastern and western theories and practices of contemporary urban design and architecture, inspiring teachers, students, and the architecture professionals of Taiwan.
These international programs have affected the Tunghai DoA students profoundly and positively. Students are more eager to travel to sister universities for exchange, while overseas internship programs have developed to further eastern and northern Europe. Student’s overall proficiency of English has increased and reached an average of B1, with a few even score perfect on assessment exams. Finally, annual applicants to postgraduate schools abroad are growing steadily with a wider diversity of destination countries.
To fulfill the globalization of education, the Architecture Design Class of Tunghai Graduate School of Architecture adjusted its education timeline to a tight one-year program in 2011. The program has become fully taught in English since 2014. International students from the United States, Middle East, Nicaragua, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand have enrolled in the program. In 2014, the master of Architecture program also signed a double-degree agreement with the Department of Architecture of CEU San Pablo University, Spain, becoming the very first double-master-degree program of Tunghai.
