A group of Sendaishirayuri Gakuen High School students led by teachers Ms. Saito Chikako and Ms. Hachiro Tomoko was hosted by Tunghai University on their study trip in Taiwan. The project was sponsored by the Japanese MEXT’s (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) Super Global High School (SGH) Funding which supports Japanese students to study short term overseas on predesigned topics.
Topics studied by the students include support to the underprivileged, international tea business, food oversupply and starvation, convenience store wastes, ageing society, history of Taiwan banana industry, and Taiwan-Japan relations. THU faculty from different disciplines joined the program to guide the student in collecting research data, interviewing informants, undertaking field studies and analyzing collected information. A visit to the Stella Matutina Girls’ High School and an experience sharing speech by Founder of THU Music Department Dr. Juanelva Rose were arranged on the topic of female education in Taiwan. Besides intensive research work, the students also attended Chinese language and English language classes and enjoyed active participation. With the 5-day program, the young minds and eyes were open to a wider and better prospect of the world.
THU Vice President Dr. Ruey-ming Tsay granted a study certificate to each student and encouraged them to keep on the energetic learning momentum and further generate conclusions that may become recommendations to improve the world. Dr. Tsay also encouraged them to cultivate wider interests in Taiwan and to consider become a student of Tunghai University.
