On November 5, Academia Sinica announced the 2021 Academia Sinica Early-Career Investigator Research Achievement Award winners. There were 9 awardees in three different divisions. Tunghai University Department of Chemistry Associate Professor Di-Yan Wang was one of the award-winners in the Mathematics and Physical Sciences Division.
According to Academia Sinica, a total of 103 applications were received this year: 33 from the Division of Mathematics and Physical Sciences, 30 from the Division of Life Sciences, and 40 from the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences. All submissions were strictly reviewed through pre-screening, initial review, secondary review, and final review. The awardees were selected through intense competition.
This year, there were a total of 9 awardees: 3 from the Division of Mathematics and Physical Sciences, 3 from the Division of Life Sciences, and 3 from the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences. Each awardee received a medal, a NT$300,000 prize and a research grant of NT$300,000. The medals and prizes were presented by Academia Sinica Vice President Chin-shing Huang.
This Academia Sinica Early-Career Investigator Research Achievement Award has been set up for over 20 years. It encourages young scholars in Taiwan to conduct in-depth research that makes significant contributions to their scholar’s fields.

Tunghai University Department of Chemistry Associate Professor Di-Yan Wang focuses his research on developing nano-structural catalyst with earth abundant material. Prof. Wang is the first researcher in Taiwan who has devoted to the research of Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction Reaction (EC-NRR) and has achieved leading discoveries which have been published in prominent international journals. As a young researcher, Prof. Wang was invited by the journal, Small, to write a commentary article “Exploration and Investigation of Periodic Elements for Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction”.
Prof. Di-Yan Wang thanked the Academia Sinica and the jury for the recognition. He also thanked the forerunners and research partners in the Tunghai Department of Chemistry for sharing research resources. He credited the achievement to all the peer researchers in his lab.
