On December 21th,2021, high school students from Washington High School and Wagor Academy visited the Tunghai International College (IC) to participate in the 2021 Open Campus. This event included a tour of the campus and sharing of student life at Tunghai.
Dean James Sims introduced the students from Washington High School and Wagor Academy to the programs offered in the IC, as well as the international opportunities provided to Tunghai students. Afterward, Professor Timo Eccarius, a teacher in the Sustainability, Science, and Engineering (SSE) Department, taught a course on Sustainable Transportation Management. In this course, students were able to reflect on their current transportation methods and think about how transportation must change to conserve the earth’s resources.

Following this course, Professor Carol Troy, a teacher in the International Business Administration (IBA) Program got students involved by doing an activity called “Lost at Sea.” In this activity, the high school students were put into teams, and the teams were asked to rank a list of items they would want to have if they were lost at sea. After completing the activity individually, they connected with their team and decided what the most important items were to have. Finally, they compared their rankings with the official coast guard answers. This exercise is used in many management courses to learn about how people think individually and as a team.
After these classes, the guests got a tour of the campus. Wagor High School got to tour the International College, including the professors’ offices and the lounge/study area on the 3rd floor. Washington High School took a quick bus tour around Tunghai’s beautiful campus.
To facilitate the open campus, several IC student leaders volunteered to help, along with the IC staff and mentors. Events like these are used to recruit new students to the all-English IC programs and to see if Tunghai is a good fit. The event went very smoothly, and students left with a better sense of what life at Tunghai could look like for them.
