With the heart for environmental preservation, on Saturday, March 12, the Tunghai Labor Education Office held the “LECCO Outlet Clean to Learn” event in collaboration with the Office of International Education & Programs and the Taiwan Beautification Association. Participants included the faculties and students of Tunghai University, managers from Pxmart Company, Wushin Study Group, Taichung Low-Carbon Association and other organizations.
Taichung’s city council Ms. Shin-Hui Huang stated that the charity event, “Clean for Love: Love the Environment Together,” not only honed people both physically and spiritually, but also spread love to others, families, and the environment, through the simple act of cleaning. As the perfect practice for a low-carbon lifestyle, it allowed people to share new perspectives brought by maintaining the environment.

Although it was drizzling and chilly in the morning, the event still attracted almost two hundred participants. Under the instruction of the Taiwan Beautification Association volunteers, they were divided into groups to learn about cleaning tools and skills. Afterwards, they cleaned the area around Taichung National Theater, clearing up fallen leaves as well as flipping open drain covers to scrape the mud.
In addition to families from nearby communities, many foreigners and Tunghai international students—from the United States, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, and Korea, to name a few—joined to be part of the cleaning team. A family from Singapore shared their thoughts after the event, saying that since the Singaporean law forbids gum, there was no gum sticking onto the ground in the city. It was interesting to scrape away gum for the first time, which also made them understand the intention behind the strict Singaporean law. A student from Indonesia who had experienced the labor education in Tunghai also said that in his hometown, there was no community service like this. He thought events like this was great and hoped to bring the idea back to Indonesia.
