Tunghai University is selected as one of the ten universities to implement Taiwan Huayu Excellence Program supported by the Ministry of Education. The Program aims at raising the visibility of high-quality Chinese language teaching in Taiwan and promoting bilateral exchanges between American universities and Chinese language teachers in Taiwan. In order to plan for a smooth implementation of the three-year program, International Officer Deputy Chief Chen-Jui Huang, on behalf of Tunghai University, and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office Director General (TECO in Chicago) Johnson Chiang and the Education Division Director Ching-Feng Tung met online on June 10, 2021 for coordination and discussions. Representatives of other selected universities, including Tamkang University, National Dong Hwa University, and Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, also joined the online conference.
The purpose of the Taiwan Huayu Excellence Program is to promote and bolster the high-quality Chinese teaching and learning environment in Taiwan. In conjunction with the strength of TECO offices, universities in Taiwan encourage student and faculty exchanges with their partner universities in the United States to boost recognition of the Chinese language learning environment and the high-quality campus life in Taiwan. The long-term goal is to increase the number of American students to study Chinese in Taiwan.
Tunghai University has chosen two partner universities in the USA for the program. They are:
University of Rhode Island (URI), one of the 12 Chinese Flagship Program universities in the USA. The US Chinese Flagship Program is a national program promoting bilingual capabilities of the students in the country.
North Park University (NPU) is a Christian university located in Chicago. NPU is a partner university of Tunghai since 2016. The two universities cooperate in dual degree the in bioscience department and regular student exchanges. The Global Studies Program in NPU requires students to learn a second language and to study abroad for the second language for at least one semester. It is a long-term goal for Tunghai University to set up a second language learning center at NPU and expand the center to become a Chinese language learning center in the Chicago area.
