Tunghai University and Taiwan Hand Tool Manufacturers’ Association (THTMA) became partners in bringing artificial intelligence into the hand tool industry. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed on November 21 by Tunghai President Prof. Mao-Jiun Wang, and the Chair of THTMA, Mr. Hsin-De Huang. Tunghai Vice President Prof. Li-Chih Wang and the entire THTMA board of directors attended the signing ceremony.
During his remarks, President Wang says that the hand tool industry, with an annual export revenue of over 120 billion NT dollars, is one of the major industries in Taiwan. The AI resources at Tunghai University, including the AI Center, AI Experience Center, Industrial Smart Transformation Center, and the ambition in AI talent incubation, will serve as a solid foundation to work with the local industry for its transformation to meet the future AI trend. President Wang promised a long-term cooperation that will elevate the global competitiveness of Taiwan’s hand tool industry through Tunghai’s technical support, internship facilities, knowledge-based added value, talent incubation, innovative R&D, corporate development and enhancement.
Speaking for its over 400 corporate members, THTMA Chair Mr. Hsin-De Huang stresses the importance of working with the academia to continue pushing the hand tool industry to move toward digitization and smart manufacturing. It is his hope that there will be five new products from Taiwan to exhibit at the 2020 International Hardware Fair Cologne (IHF). Mr.Huang says that a platform shared by the industry and the academia will be essential to maximize the effect of the cooperation between the two sectors.
THTMA is planning to establish a hand tool museum in which the industrial history, special topics of local industry economy, and oral history will be exhibited. A smart hand tool design accelerator is also under intensive planning. The Cloud Innovation School and the AI Experience Center (the Ring) of Tunghai University will serve as an ideal power engine for generating new ideas for the museum through AI concept and field experiences.
