IS3 2019 Academic Forum for Indonesian Postgraduates in Taiwan Successfully Ended

Tunghai University has been entrusted with Indonesia-Taiwan Education Center by the Ministry of Education for four years. For the purpose of promoting higher education exchange between Taiwan and Indonesia, the second academic forum IS3 2019 (Indonesian Scholars Scientific Summit 2019) was co-hosted with Indonesian Postgraduates in Taiwan Union (PPI). This forum was held on November 24, 2019 at Maobang Hall of Tunghai University with a total of 250 and more Indonesian postgraduates and scholars from different universities and colleges all over Taiwan. Among them, there are 65 PhD students who are lecturer-level.

During this forum, Mr. Fajar Nuradi, Director of the Indonesian Citizens Protection and Social Cultural Department from the Indonesian Economic and Trade Office in Taipei (KDEI), was invited to give a speech. Dr. Li-Chih Wang, Vice President of Tunghai University, and Dr. Endo Tesuya, Professor of Aomori Public University in Japan, were the forum’s keynote speakers. Dr Li-Chih Wang mentioned in his speech that with the opening of the second IS3 forum, he was very touched to see a forum hosted by students themselves to be this spectacular and was looking forward to see more high quality discussions in the future that will together promote both Taiwan and Indonesia’s higher education exchange.
IS3 is an annual event hosted by the student union of those Indonesian postgraduates who are studying in Taiwan, and this year is the second time of hosting. The purpose of this forum is not only to bring together the Indonesian postgraduates for exchange and connection, but also hoping to contribute to the society by students sharing and discussing their research reports from different fields of study, including culture, society, economy, electronics, energy, risk management, environment, agriculture, education, and many others. There were total of 108 theses submitted by postgraduates, and among those, 50 papers and 20 posters were presented. The authors of these papers and posters were given a chance to have their papers published at Scopus database and journal after passing the I3S Procedure Committee’s thorough review.

The topic of this year’s forum reflected the current world trend. Dr. Li-Chih Wang, who is also a professor of Industrial Engineering, was the keynote speaker of one of the major topics, “Industry 4.0”. He provided information from fundamental theory to realistic application and analysis on how different countries develop industry 4.0 and gain its benefits. Dr. Endo Tesuya from Japan was another keynote speaker for another major topic, “Society 5.0”. His speech included his experiences in Japan to elaborate on society 5.0 using AI with big data as the core to bring benefits in society and economics to the field of life nationwide. Dr. Endo Tesuya also gave a thorough deconstruction on Japan Society 5.0’s idea and background. He explained on how it can apply to daily life and difficulties, with solutions.

After presentation of the major topics, students and lecturers attending the forum eagerly participated in the discussions, which addressed the questions: As a person trained with higher education, how shall we raise our next generation? How to use the experiences from industry 4.0 and society 4.5 to bring more future to current students?” To answer these questions, Dr. Li-Chih Wang shared THU’s experiences in fostering students. Tunghai University’s goal is to be a top university (model university of holistic education) in fostering students by helping students to acquire ability of two kinds of languages( foreign language and programming language) by graduation, receive three most important learning (liberal arts, field learning, and e-learning) while studying, and pursue four kinds of sustainability (culture, society, economic, and ecological sustainability). The purpose of school is not only to pass down knowledge from books, but to consider more aspects for the benefit of students.

Among the 250 participants in this year’s forum, other than the postgraduates studying in different universities over Taiwan, many are professors and lecturers teaching in different Indonesian universities, such as Gajah Mada University, Airlangga University, University of Indonesia, Padjadjaran University, Indonesia Islamic University, Palangkaraya University, State University of Semarang, University of Pendidikan Indonesia, Muhammadiyah University in Surakarta, and many others.
