Tunghai Hosts Cross-strait USR Forum

The “2019 University Social Responsibility and Cross-strait Senior Service Forum” was held on July 22 at Tunghai University. Domestic universities including National Chi Nan University (NCNU), National Taiwan University of Sport (NTUS), Providence University (PU), China Medical University (CMU), Feng-Jia University (FJU), Nan-Kai University of Technology (NKUT), Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology (STUST), and Hungkuang University (HKU) were invited to share their USR experiences. Representatives from the Institute of Population Research of Peking University also shared their system and services in nursing and caring of senior citizens. Besides sharing experiences in their USR programs, the attending universities discussed future opportunities in cross-institutional and cross-regional collaborations.

Led by Vice President Dr. Chia-Chung Chan, the Tunghai USR program has constructed five supporting systems for local senior citizens. Program Vice Director Dr. Chi-wei Cheng reported how positive feedbacks from the local community inspire the program to move on to generate more impact.

NCNU Prof. K.L. Liang attracted enthusiastic discussions with introduction of their innovative operation model combining local organizations and university students to serve senior people. PU Prof. J.J. Lin shared the success story of organizing the Senior Festival in the Central Coastal Area. STUST Director M.J. Chen shared how she and her students went to remote areas to care for and serve the seniors and brought changes to the community. Besides, FJU Prof. Samuel Hou presented technologies that could be used for senior care and evoked great interest for collaboration.

Following the discussion, the participants were invited to visit the Tunghai Match Kitchen Lab and to experience how the experimental kitchen develop healthy cuisine for senior people. Taking the opportunity, Tunghai University has proposed to form a USR alliance to forge a quality senior supporting system through inter-university cooperation. The proposal gained full support from all the participating parties. It is anticipated that more faculty members and students will join the USR program so as to create a better future for an aging society.
