Connecting to Internships at International Businesses
The Ministry of Education sponsors the “Global Internship Facilitation of Taiwan” program administered by Tunghai University
In 2016, for the purpose of helping students find their career paths through internships, Professor En-Te Hsu of Tungahi University partnered with the Corporate Synergy Development Center to build the International Talent Pipeline Platform, which offers internship matching services for free to students and teachers at all universities in Taiwan, effectively connecting students with high-quality internship positions. Currently, the platform has 117 domestic and international business members, and has placed 368 students, representing 22 universities and 34 academic departments, at internship positions in Taiwan, Italy, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, and mainland China. Moreover, the platform has 106 teacher members, acting as counselors to the student interns. The objective of this platform is to provide assistance to quality Taiwanese companies, who intend to develop international talent, so that they can initiate contact with and recruit outstanding college students ahead of time, thus creating a “Sustainable Talent Pipeline” for Taiwan.
Since 2018, the Ministry of Education has sponsored the administration of the Global Internship Facilitation of Taiwan (GIFT) program by Professor Hsu, which involved expanding the services offered by the International Talent Pipeline Platform to international and overseas Chinese students studying in Taiwan. This platform also welcomes domestic and international companies that are legally registered in Taiwan to become business members. Originally, the International Talent Pipeline Platform required student members to obtain recommendations from their teachers in school before any internship placement. In the future, GIFT will offer both regular and premium memberships to students. Regular membership is obtained by providing basic personal information—so businesses can conduct an initial review—and uploading transcripts, certifications, and proofs of language proficiency. Once a regular student member passes the initial review of a business, he or she is eligible to become an intern; the student can then invite a teacher from his or her original school to join as a teacher member. With a teacher member associated with the student, the regular membership is upgraded to a premium membership. Premium student members of GIFT receive priority access to both domestic and international internship positions. The initial goal of GIFT program set by Mr. Andy Bi, Director-General of the Department of International and Cross-strait Education of the Ministry of Education, is to recruit 10,000 student members.
On August 8, 2018, Chairman Kim Tsai of Mobiletron arranged for Professor En-Te Hsu to meet with Mr. Leehter Yao, Deputy Minister of Education, and report on the internship programs under his management. During the meeting, the Deputy Minister had high praise for the achievements of Professor Hsu’s International Internship Program and thanked Chairman Tsai for his donations that allowed economically disadvantaged youth to undertake internships abroad; these accomplishments represented new milestones in the promotion of internship programs in Taiwan. Beginning in 2019, the GIFT program will ask for submission of model cases of internships by businesses, students, and teachers, from which the Ministry of Education will select the best to publicly award. In addition, the program also encourages businesses, students, and teachers to submit articles related to internships to its newsletter, For the Greater Good. If the submitted article is published after review, the writer will receive a fee for his or her work. The newsletter is published in bothChinese and English, so foreign businesses and international and overseas Chinese students can also receive related and timely information on the program.
We would like to invite young people who wish to obtain excellent internship opportunities in Taiwan or abroad to join the GIFT platform as student members. We also welcome domestic or global businesses to become business members of GIFT; they can provide internship opportunities to current university students in Taiwan, international and overseas Chinese students, and college graduates under the age of 30; in turn, these businesses can come into early contact with quality talent they need.

On September 11, 2017, program director Professor En-Te Hsu and Italian representative Mr. Amedeo Teti take a photo together at the 7th Meeting of the Taiwanese-Italian Economic and Financial Cooperation Forum. Mr. Teti expressed strong support for Professor Hsu’s internship program.
