On November 8, Tunghai University held the opening ceremony of residential learning village - “Artist Village” at the 72th and 73th dormitory buildings. Since this academic year, Tunghai has made good use of geographical location of its dormitory space which was not centralized, to develop ten characteristic thematic villages, including “International village” and “Innovative and Groundbreaking Village”.
This academic year, each dormitory building respectively set up residential learning in different fields : “Ten Thematic Villages”, which include “International Village” that incorporate multicultural learning, “Innovative and Groundbreaking Village” to develop interdisciplinary learning of creativity, “Artist Village” to promote aesthetic education on humanity, “Hunter Village” to deepen the concept of service learning, “Luce Village” to pursue truth and living in love, “Learning Village” to foster self-disciplined gentlemen, “Poya Village” to implement life education, “Tunghai New Village” to shape new Tunghai students, “Soar House” and “Love Home” to fulfil love, care and trust, making students get immersed in these themes’ atmosphere, while advancing and implementing the community learning environment.
Principle Mao-Jiun J. Wang said, Tunghai had just celebrated its 62th anniversary last week, and there were still many celebrations, thus alumni were welcomed to return to school to share the joy. He also mentioned that this year happened to be the 40th anniversary of his graduation, and many of his schoolmates are also back to school for the reunion; together they recalled the fond memories of the past, among which many took place during the dormitory life, and that all kinds of communication in school days was very precious. Since its foundation, Tunghai has been placing high importance on liberal education, labor program and residential learning. And today, Office of Student Affairs took “Residential Learning” as an innovative development, launching ten residential thematic villages, hoping students with same interests and aspirations could live in the same area, discuss with and compete with each other. Therefore, in the residential thematic villages, students could not only learn together in life, but also develop their hobbies and specialties with the guidance of the village head. This conception does not merely accord with Tunghai’s educational idea “Holistic Training, Liberal Education”, but also cultivates students’ innovative and creative ability.

The school encourages students to get liberal education and interdisciplinary learning, expecting students start to explore their own interests after the enrollment. Except for the development of professional skills, students can also learn through the interdisciplinary approach, exploring their interests and directions earlier. The combination of art and humanity in “Art Village”, is exactly the practice of educational aesthetics in life.
Winston Lo, dean of student affairs, said that when he was in high school, art lessons were always taken up by math classes, thus he had no opportunity to be involved in art; it was after entering the society that he got the chance to visit art exhibitions. Today, he was really happy that Lin wen-hai, dean of College of Fine Arts and Creative Design, was willing to make the 72th and 73th dormitory buildings become artist villages, hanging more than 160 paintings in every corner of dormitory corridors, and installing large-scale artworks designed by famous artists. We hoped the dormitory will not only be a places for previewing and reviewing lessons, but also an important site for group interaction, community power cohesion and civic life operation. Living in the dormitory, you can learn how to get alone with others, how to create your own living environment and have self-exploration and inner growth. As a freshman, you are free to be the villager you want to be, and you can work, study, eat and share together with other villagers, so that you can explore yourself, realize your dream and enrich the college life.

Lin wen-hai, dean of College of Fine Arts and Creative Design and head of student dormitory “Artist Village” said that the diversified content and expression of public art, could not only establish aesthetic view of it, but also improve everyone’s daily aesthetic cultural quality and life. With the completion of “Artist Village”, students shall take it as the base point, forming the aesthetics of life, driving artistic-related diversified activities, exchanging ideas on the theme of cohesion and solidarity, jointly creating the living community, to form proper aesthetic value through daily life’s cultivation and edification.

In the artist village, Tunghai displays the work of students who made use of their spare time to participate in the “Art Project Learning” offered by the dormitory and attended the exhibition of artistic appreciation and creation. Except from the paintings of students who took the course, other creation and curation of the villagers, artists at home and abroad were invited to participate in the first exhibition of campus sculpture, and there are also students’ personal exhibitions. In total, more than one hundred of paintings were hanging in the village. The original monotonous walkway space of student dormitory, briefly turned into an art “gallery” with strong ambience of literature and art. As for outdoor green turf, due to the decoration of large-scale art installations, it has become an artistic sculpture park. “Artist Village” pleases all its residents; and has become a newest popular check-in location.
