In July 2016, Professor Jo-Hsuan Ho of Tunghai’s Department of Food Science led three students to attend a one-month summer internship program in Chiba Prefecture, Japan where they were hosted by the Sudo Farm and the Tokiwaya Supermarket Prepared Food Department.
Sudo Farm is the largest dairy farm and dairy processing factory in Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture. Their main products are milk and ice-cream. This year, they won the highest recognition from Meiji, Japan’s largest dairy company. Their milk and ice-cream products are mostly sold in AEON, a national chain supermarket in Japan. The internship opportunity offered to Tunghai’s students enabled them to gain precious experience in the sanitary management of food processing, the manufacturing and processing of dairy prepared foods, and the manufacture of fresh milk and ice-cream. In addition to gaining practical and managerial experience, the students were also able to polish their English and Japanese proficiency and broaden their cultural perspectives.

Mayor Kenichi Kanamaru of Tateyama City warmly welcomed Tunghai’s students, and the Bonichi News reported on the Tunghai student internship and their outstanding performance. During the period of the internship, the city government of Tateyama also arranged a series of cultural activities, including a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, the Yukata Festival (Yukata being the Japanese traditional summer bathrobe), and the annual summer fireworks festival. The Japanese hosts hoped that, in addition to their internships and studies, the students could also deepen their knowledge of Japanese culture, an objective which is very much in line with Tunghai’s vision of international exchange programs.

According to Chair Chuan-Liang Hsu of the Department of Food Science, the department hopes that overseas internships will enable students to learn more practical skills and develop their language proficiency, as well as acquire professional knowledge and a better understanding of foreign cultures, thus giving them competitive advantages in their future careers.
