As Tunghai President Mao-Jiun Wang described, Prof. Fu-Kuan Hsu was a significant figure for the contemporary Confucian study and one of the founding faculty members of Tunghai University. Prof. Hsu taught in Tunghai for 14 years, establishing Tunghai's foundation in humanities and its spirits in academic pursuits. Professor Hsu established his irreplaceable academic reputation and worldwide influence in Tunghai; his students could be found all over the world. Considering the special relationship between Professor Hsu and Tunghai University, the Hsu family set up the "Professor Hsu Fu-Kuan Academic Forum" to be implemented by Tunghai University. The forum would invite academic leaders in the field of humanities around the world to share their views and research results. Through this forum, they hope to increase academic exchanges in honor of Professor Hsu.
The Hsu family also generously donated the Military Service Discharge Order of Professor Hsu, a written letter of his mother, as well as other historical items to Tunghai University. Professor Rur-Bin Yang from National Tsing Hua University also donated some historical items for memoir. After the ceremony, the guests visited Tunghai's university library to see the section that kept all items of Professor Hsu. Fu-Kuan Hsu (1903-1982) was a Chinese intellectual and historian who made notable contributions to Confucian studies. He taught at the Department of Chinese Literature of Tunghai University from 1955 to 1969, teaching courses like Chinese Philosophy, Chinese Classics: Wen Hsin Tiao Lung, and The Records of the Grand Historian (Shih-Chi). He was also the director of the department. Since he had a strong bond with Tunghai University, he donated all of his academic belongings to Tunghai University library except for the one thousand Japanese books that went to Hong Kong Chinese University. The donation included 1,594 thread-bond ancient books, 3,120 hardcover and paperback books, manuscripts, and paintings. The Department of Chinese Literature of Tunghai University would organize the manuscripts to pass on the spirits of Professor Hsu.
According to student of Professor Hsu and retired professor of the Department of Chinese Literature of Tunghai University, Fu-Chu Wu, the manuscripts of Professor Hsu were priceless assets that would greatly contribute to international academic research. There were many marks of changes in the manuscripts, showing how Professor Hsu edited and polished his writings. Professor Yang of National Tsing Hua University also pointed out that contemporary culture was always built upon local cultures. To the Chinese community, Professor Hsu's academic achievements combined cultures from China and Taiwan and localized traditional ideas, which would not only influenced the Chinese community, but also worldwide culture.
As Tunghai passed over 60 years since its foundation, the establishment of this forum brought back the founders' beliefs in education. This showed both our appreciation towards Professor Hsu, while demonstrating Tunghai's determination in refreshing traditions.
