The 2017 Innovators Expo “Connection and Imagination” was held from June 3 to 4. This year, there were 83 pieces of work participating in the expo. Some of them integrated the latest AR and VR technology, combining technology with humanities. It was an expo full of surprises and inspiration.
The Innovators Expo started with Tunghai President Mao-Jiun Wang activating the Luce Chapel point-cloud and VR project. To celebrate the 100th birthday of Chinese American master architect, Ieoh Ming Pei, a special exhibition area for miniaturized wooden models of Luce Chapel and showcasing old pictures of its establishment was included. Utilizing the modern technology, point-cloud machine, to scan and integrate with VR technology, visitors were able to experience entering the Luce Chapel at the expo site. The project was done with setting up 52 detection stations around the Luce Chapel and was completed with 14.8 billion points of floating cloud computing.

The variety of projects presented at the expo demonstrated how creative Tunghai students could be. There was the Bamboodia, product designed by students of the Department of Industrial Design. The Bamboodia was recently awarded the Best of Young Pin Design in both Product Design and Craft Design categories by the 2017 Golden Pin Design Award. There was also the “Z Machine” by Chris Chao and “PostPET” by Xin-Min Peng and Yen-Heng Chang, respectively golden award and bronze award in the 3D Model and Product category of the Kaohsiung 2017 Youth Innovative Design Festival. In addition to students from the Department of Industrial Design, the departments of Architecture, Landscape Design and Fine Arts, as well as the Digital Innovation Master Degree Program and the Entrepreneurial Thought & Action Program of the College of Engineering all presented inspiring and mind-opening creativity and thinking.
A great variety of projects were demonstrated
The theme of this year’s expo is “Connection and Imagination.” The expo especially developed an AR guidance App. By scanning the event posters, visitors were able to see the AR animations of nominated projects and the introductions of the project teams. The internet system and AR technology was programmed, built, and supported by Tunghai’s Computing Center.
Luce Chapel point-cloud and VR experience
The Innovators Expo keeps its focus on “innovators” rather than “innovation.” Tunghai believes that only a liberal, democratic campus culture can cultivate people with opinions and characters. Talents, characters, and humanities are what we need the most in the future generations. The expo held its final round of evaluation on June 3. The team of judges consisted of honorable professionals and industry leaders, including Chairman & CEO Kim Tsai of Mobiletron (Taiwan), Director Ping Lin of Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Professor Jen-Teng Tsai of Tunghai University, Incumbent Political Deputy Director Ching-Hwi Lee of the National Palace Museum, and Co-Curator Chih-Kang Chu of the 2016 La Biennale di Venezia.
Judges and awarded students
The purpose of the Innovators Expo is to raise the global perspectives and connection of students with innovation potentials. The awarded students will not only receive a scholarship, but also be provided with opportunities of internship, visits, and exhibitions in University of Venice, which are sponsored by local business. Jumbo Technology also provides internship positions along with an opportunity to participate in the 2018 Macao International Expo. AECOM provided students with opportunities to intern in their Shanghai and Singapore offices.
