Tunghai University organizes educational visit to Indonesia with high schools

The 2017 Taiwan Expo in Indonesia was held in Jakarta during May 12 to 14, 2017, organized by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA). Besides business exchanges, to further extend the collaboration between Indonesia and Taiwan, Taiwan Education Center Indonesia hosted by Tunghai University was also invited to establish collaborative opportunities in higher education of both countries.
At the same time, Dean Hong-Wei Yen of the Office of International Education and Programs and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Ying-Chyi Chou, organized a team of 23 from 18 high school representatives across Taiwan to form a visiting delegation. Under the supervision of former Ambassador of Taiwan in France, Michel Ching-Long Lu, and Deputy Education Counselor Kuo-Chen Chen of the Department of International and Cross Strait Education of the Ministry of Education, Taiwan, the visiting team took on a four-day educational and business tour in Indonesia. The delegation not only brought education development across countries, but also combined the strength of vertical collaboration between colleges and high schools.
The delegation visited Taiwan Education Center Indonesia, Jakarta Taipei School, Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan Negeri 30 Jakarta vocational school, Director of Academic Affairs, Directorate General of Higher Education, MoNE Professor Illah Saillah, and many Indonesian alumni. In addition to understanding the educational environment and policies, the visiting team and the visitees exchanged and discussed about ideas of international education collaboration, English education, and Indonesian students’ education experiences in Taiwan. Former Ambassador Michel C.L. Lu had stationed in France for 16 years. He shared his insights towards the development and globalization of higher education in France for Taiwan and Indonesia’s reference. Deputy Education Counselor Kuo-Chen Chen shared the government’s policies and thoughts regarding higher education as part of the New Southern Policy, providing suggestions to higher education planning and resource allocation.
Chinese Indonesian Ying-Chang Kao established Pt. Formosa Teknologi Sentral and Pt. Intermesindo Forging Prima, introducing Taiwan’s experiences and advantages in vocational education to Indonesia while recruiting Indonesian vocational graduates and train them to become maintenance and technical talents. Mr. Kao introduced the operation of his company and factory, pointing out the differences between Taiwanese and Indonesian students in terms of practices and implementation due to their different educational backgrounds. He also talked about the opportunities and challenges faced by Taiwanese businesses in Indonesia. He strongly recommended university graduates to be equipped with the ability to use international languages and strong professional skills and knowledge, which were considered the key factors of becoming an international talent.
Executive Willy Yanto Wijaya of the Taiwan Education Center Indonesia hosted the gala dinner. Seniors of the Indonesia in Taiwan Alumni Association shared their careers and achievements in Indonesia while acknowledging Taiwan’s educational effort in the New Southern Policy. They believed there were opportunities in higher education and Taiwan would see more outstanding Indonesian students. Chair Ernie Kartolo of the Indonesia Tunghai Alumni Association (alumna of Tunghai Department of Chemistry) addressed the experiences of Chinese students studying in Taiwan and their careers after returning to their home countries after graduation.
At the end of the trip, the Overseas Community Affairs Council in Jakarta invited the visiting team to attend the inaugural dinner of Minister Dr. Hsin-Hsing Wu. The insight exchanges between the team and Indonesian representatives added value to the entire journey.
