I am still young, I have tomorrow……
Before tomorrow,
I must seize each opportunity to spark the fire that I should.
I must be, in the grand era of tomorrow,
no longer in tears.
-- Lien-Hua Chou (1920-2016)
Former Chairman of the Tunghai University Board, Chou Lien-Hua, rested in the peace of God on August 6th. Tunghai organized a memorial exhibition during September 21st to 30th with a memorial ceremony on the 23rd. The memorial ceremony was held in the Luce Chapel. Former and current school presidents, including Mao-Juin Wang, Ta-Nien Yuan, and Kang-Pei Wang, as well as board member Chin-Seng Chen and the wife of former president Ming-Jer Tang attended the gathering. Many of Pastor Chou’s acquaintances from different time periods of his term in Tunghai shared their grief. A memorial video was played in the ceremony.
The theme of the memorial ceremony was “the love advocate who lives without tomorrow,” an excerpt from Pastor Chou’s biography. In the ever-changing and complicated social political environment, Pastor Chou had been determined to “live as if there was no tomorrow” since he was young. As a result, even at a high age of over 90, he was still an active lecturer at seminaries and participant in charity organizations such as World Vision Taiwan, demonstrating the physical strength and vibes as if he was young.
Pastor Chou devoted himself into preaching after graduating from University of Shanghai, China. Following the experiences in the turmoil during the Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War, he came to Taiwan after finishing his PhD study in the seminary of Southern Baptist Convention of the United States in 1954. During the time when Taiwan was working its way through political challenges, Pastor Chen put a huge effort into bonding the Chinese and Taiwanese churches as one unaffected by political power. Pastor Chou became the symbol of love as he treated the world with the love of Christ.
Additionally, Pastor Chou was a talented Christianity scholar and an author of 55 publications suitable for different levels of Christian readers as well as non-Christians. In his earlier years, he was also passionate about painting. His works were displayed in the exhibition.
Starting from 1957, Pastor Chou was a member of the Tunghai University Board, serving three terms of being the Chairman (1960-1962, 1970-1972, 1991-1994). His humble personalities and respectful attitude towards God and mankind contributed highly to the foundation and development of Tunghai University. The Christianity which former Chairman Lien-Hua Chou believed and followed will be an everlasting guidance to Tunghai family.
