A group of students from the Bo-Ya School of Tunghai University completed a bike trip around Taiwan from June 29 to July 12, 2016. The journey was part of their project, “Cambikedia: Dream to Cambodia,” to promote for and introduce the Cambodian Christian school, Rapha Institute.
Sixty years ago, a group of foreign missionaries traveled across the Pacific Ocean to Taichung, where they established Tunghai University based on the spirits of Christianity. Today, a group of Taiwanese missionaries is heading to medically resource-lacking Cambodia to found another Christianity-based school, Rapha Institute. The dean of the school is Professor Hsueh-Wen Chang, alumnus of Tunghai Department of Biology in 1978 and a current professor in National Sun Yat-Sen University. Eight students of the Tunghai Bo-Ya School formed a “Cambikedia” team, hoping to raise funds for Rapha Institute by completing a bike trip around Taiwan. They shared stories about Cambodia during the journey, spreading the seeds of love in the hearts of those they encountered. They also invited friends who supported the cause to join them as a “one-day bike mate” and campaign together.
Members of “Cambikedia” included students from various departments of Tunghai, such as Public Management and Policy, Industrial Engineering and Enterprise Information, Political Science, Japanese Language and Culture, and Sociology. They managed an introductory Facebook Page for Rapha Institute while meeting up with Tunghai alumni at rest stations, train stations, churches, and other places. Additionally, they held an informational sharing meeting in National Sun Yat-Sen University to introduce Rapha Institute with greater details.
To encourage more people to physically support them and participate in their campaign, they invited forty one-day bike mates in Taipei, Taichung, Chiayi, and Kaohsiung to ride along with them. These bike mates include Professor I-Min Tso, Dean of the Bo-Ya School, Tunghai alumni, as well as Tunghai students across the country. Zhu-Ping Yuan, Chairman of the Tunghai Alumni Association also showed up at the event to support and encourage the students.
In August, Professor Hsueh-Wen Chang is leading another team of Bo-Ya students, “Cambodia Together,” to participate in the Cambodia Care Project. They will provide volunteer services in Cambodia with teams from Canada and Hong Kong. For more information, please visit Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/dreamtocambodia/?fref=ts
