Congratulations to alumna Kang-I Sun Chang on becoming the 2016 Academician of the Academia Sinica

On July 7th, the Academia Sinica announced twenty new Academicians and two Honorary Academicians elected from the biennial Convocation of Academicians of 2016. Kang-I Sun Chang, alumna of the 8th class of the Tunghai Department of Foreign Languages and Literature was elected as the Academician for Division of Humanities and Social Sciences. Tunghai was humbly graced by the high honor as the Academia Sinica stood as the greatest academic stage for scholars in Taiwan. There are seven outstanding Tunghai alumni who have received this honor so far, making Tunghai the leading institution among all private universities in this regard.
Sixty years of conducting excellent education and cultivating talents, Tunghai is proud of alumni who have been granted Academicians by the Academia Sinica, including Yung-Chi Cheng (8th Class of Department of Chemistry), Robert K. Yu (2th Class of Department of Foreign Languages and Literature), Chung-I Wu (18th Class of Department of Life Science), Hung-Wen Liu (16th Class of Department of Chemistry), Chun-Fang Wu (11th of Department of Life Science). As for Academicians abroad, Kris Yao (17th of Department of Architecture) is awarded the Honorary Fellowship of the American Institute of Architects in 2014, while the newly elected Academician of the Acadamia Sinica, Kang-I Sun Chang, was also elected as an Academician of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Tunghai alumna Academician Kang-I Sun Chang
Academician Kang-I Sun Chang earned her M.A. in classical Chinese literature in Princeton University in 1976. Now, she teaches in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures of Yale University as a tenured professor and previously as Chairperson of the department and the Director of Graduate Studies. She is especially interested in classical Chinese literature, Comparative Poetics, Comparative Cultural Studies, Cultural Theory, Gender Studies of the United States, which many publications of hers focus on. She is the very first Asian female chairperson of a department ever since the prestigious institution in the Ivy League, Yale University, was founded in 1701.
Tunghai Academician Forum organized by Alumni Association
Tunghai President Mao-Jiun Wang congratulated Kang-I Sun Chang on receiving the highest honor in the Taiwanese academic field. Since its establishment, Tunghai University has devoted itself in cultivating student’s professionalism, service attitudes, and practical abilities while valuing their unique personal growth in humanities and arts. As a result, there are outstanding alumni of Tunghai in every profession. Recently, Tunghai hosted a biennial Academician Forum that attracted two hundred alumni and all six Academicians to participate in. They provided valuable advices on the development of Tunghai, showing how strongly they cared for and bonded with their alma mater.
