Following an investment exceeding NT$100 million in AI teaching infrastructure, Tunghai University has officially launched a state-of-the-art AI computing center valued at NT$30 million. Taichung Mayor Lu Hsiu-Yen emphasized that “digital capability is the key to a city’s competitiveness.” With the generous donation of advanced servers from alumnus Lee Shih-Chin, Tunghai now possesses the most powerful computing capacity among universities in Taiwan. The university is set to become a crucial pillar supporting Taichung’s journey toward AI transformation by 2026. Together with President Chang Kuo-En, Mayor Lu envisions Tunghai as a new engine for AI talent cultivation and smart city development in Taiwan.

The inauguration ceremony was held on the 5th at Tunghai University, attended by Mayor Lu Hsiu-Yen, President Chang Kuo-En, Chairman Wu Ching-Mai, Taichung Deputy Mayor Cheng Chao-Hsin, Director Hsu Mao-Hsin of the Central Taiwan Science Park Administration, Director Lin Ku-Lung of the Taichung Digital Development Bureau, former Minister of Science and Technology and former ITRI President Hsu Chueh-Min, Senior Vice President Chen Yi-Ping of Inventec, and donor Lee Shih-Chin, founder of Inventec, among other distinguished guests.
President Chang noted that the university’s AI infrastructure investment over the past two years has reached a new milestone with the launch of the computing center. Donated by Lee Shih-Chin—an outstanding alumnus and honorary chairman—the center provides cutting-edge computational power that not only strengthens academic research but also supports the city government’s digital transformation initiatives. Lee expressed his deep pride in giving back to his alma mater, stating that the donation aims to ensure that students gain access to industry-level, or even leading-edge, computing resources during their studies, equipping them with immediate practical capabilities in the rapidly evolving AI field.

Mayor Lu praised the computing center as a key accelerator for Taichung’s smart city transformation and affirmed Tunghai’s leadership in AI talent development across Taiwan. She highlighted her administration’s commitment to digital innovation, noting that Taichung was the first city in Taiwan to establish a Digital Development Bureau. With the integration of the new computing center and Tunghai’s existing AI PC classrooms, the university is well-positioned to serve as a strong foundation for the city’s AI-driven future. Mayor Lu expressed her expectation to collaborate closely with President Chang to inject robust research capacity and cultivate high-level AI talent for the region.

President Chang Kuo-En noted that the computing center, generously donated by alumnus Lee Shih-Chin, will drive AI talent development and smart city innovation in Taiwan.
President Chang reiterated that the vision of “AI Tunghai: Generating the Future” is being actively realized. With total investment in AI exceeding NT$100 million, and with the addition of Lee’s NT$30 million high-performance computing system, Tunghai is enabling faculty and students to engage in advanced interdisciplinary research. Chairman Wu Ching-Mai added that the university’s board fully supports the development of AI infrastructure and aims to ensure that students can access cutting-edge industry technologies during their studies. Tunghai is transforming its strategic vision into tangible achievements in industry–academia collaboration and will continue to expand its social impact, leading the transformation of higher education in Taiwan.
