The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at Tunghai University has raised over NT$6 million in scholarships to encourage outstanding students to enroll. It has also actively integrated generative AI into its speaking and writing curriculum. According to Dr. Mei-Hui Liu, the department head, AI provides a significant boost to the department. Foreign language students, with their fluent language skills, can excel in computer engineering design or even pursue careers as software engineers. Many have also gained admission to prestigious institutions like Columbia University. Dr. Liu believes that choosing to major in foreign languages in the AI era is a wise decision. This year, Tunghai successfully attracted nearly 45 top English-performing students through its 2024 Star Program, special selection, and application processes. The majority of these students achieved top scores, reaffirming the department as a popular choice among high school students.

Dr. Liu noted that generative AI will enhance learning outcomes for humanities disciplines. Tunghai's Department of Foreign Languages and Literature is currently integrating AI into its comprehensive teaching of speaking and writing skills. Dr. Liu emphasized that the department has begun reforming the educational environment to ensure students achieve their best, from academic pursuits to career development. To attract top-tier students, the department has raised significant scholarship funds over the past two years. For instance, the "Learning Excellence Project Scholarships" offer 30 spots annually, giving students a chance to receive awards each year. Additionally, every freshman admitted through the application process, all of whom achieved top-tier scores, received NT$20,000 to NT$40,000 in entrance scholarships. Dr. Liu believes these talented students will become exceptional professionals through AI-enhanced learning.
The department also provides comprehensive academic and career support services, including two sessions of Online English Bridging Courses during summer, one-on-one career counseling, group guidance, and internship matching for senior students. It has introduced AI technology and foreign language learning modules, co-designed by humanities and engineering experts. Dr. Liu highlighted the advantage foreign language students have in mastering programming, enabling them to compete with science and engineering peers for lucrative jobs. For example, alumna Lin Jia-Ying is now a software engineer at Jourdeness International Beauty Group.

The department continues to shine in national language competitions. Junior students Jian Jun-An and Lee Bo-Lin won the championship in the "2024 Wenzao Cup National Collegiate English Poetry Recitation Contest." Senior student Huang Jia-Sheng claimed the national championship in the "2024 Joy English National Storytelling Contest" and the "2024 Simulated Presidential Candidate Speech Competition." Another senior, Lin Pei-Jun, received a research grant from the National Science Council and presented a paper at an international conference. In terms of graduate admissions, the class of 2024 achieved outstanding results, gaining acceptance into prestigious universities such as Columbia University, the University of Edinburgh, University College London, the University of Sheffield, the University of Glasgow, as well as top domestic institutions like National Chengchi University and National Cheng Kung University. Many graduates also pursued further studies at Tunghai’s own Graduate Institute of Foreign Languages.
