Smart Seed House Designed by Tunghai Department of Architecture Wins Japan Good Design Award

A sustainable “Smart Seed House”designed by Tunghai University Department of Architecture won the 2022 Good Design Award in Japan. The design features a resilient future living space with three concepts – green living, distant symbiosis and smart space. With AIoT technology, the Smart Seed House enjoys both city and countryside life styles. It has been built on Tunghai campus and will be open for visits soon.
Smart City and Countryside Seed Houses beside Tunghai AI Center
The Good Design Award in Japan is one of the four major design awards, famed as ‘ the Design Oscar Award of the East’. The project “SEED House: Living in Equilibrium with Environmental Intelligence”was supported by the Dadushan-Tunghai AI Center and co-created by teams from Architecture Department, College of Engineering, Digital Innovation Program and AI Center.
With the goal of building an "Autonomous Architecture" that reduces carbon, creates energy, and balances, the team built two smart seed houses that represent the "city" and "countryside" in the school campus. Through AIoT smart internet and interactive sensing technology, a smart building that integrates sustainable material construction process and environmental data constructs a new space model of "Form follows Energy" and achieves the design of "distant cohabitation, environmental symbiosis, and urban and rural co-benefits".

While building the smart seed house, the Department of Architecture has also established a Master’s degree program "M.Arch in Sustainable and Digital Innovation". The program is the only English-taught international architecture program in Taiwan, aiming at cultivating forward-looking and creative future architectural professionals and interdisciplinary design talents. It focuses on integrated architectural frontier research such as architectural bionics, circular economy, smart design, and cross-domain innovation. The program contains an intensive course of contemporary architectural theory combined with design workshops, with humanistic perspectives as the foundation of innovation. In response to the artificial intelligence era, Tunghai explores innovative architectural and urban space strategies with forward-looking social, cultural and industrial values through cross-domain sustainability design and development.
