Tunghai Luce Chapel to be Renovated Alumni Chi-Chang Tsai and Others Conduct Site Survey

Luce Chapel is the spiritual fortress of Tunghai University. It is the first modernist building to be designated as a national historic site after the Second World War in Taiwan. The chapel will undergo a large-scale restoration at the end of the year. Deputy President of the Legislative Yuan, Chi-chang Tsai, and several legislators and members of the Taichung City Council, accompanied by Tunghai President Kuo-en Chang, conducted a site survey at the chapel.

The Luce Chapel is a classic modernist building with reinforced concrete shell structure completed in 1963. It was co-designed by renowned architects Ieoh-Ming Pei and Chi-Kuan Chen. After being in service for over half a century, the chapel has become in need of major renovation. Deputy President of the Legislative Yuan Chi-chang Tsai has secured a total budget of 38 million NTD for the renovation, aiming to solve chronic problems of water leakage, window-frame rust, outer wall ceramic tile brokerage, and interior electrical facilities. Mr. Tsai invited legislator Wan-Chien Chang-Liao, Ministry of Culture Deputy Minister Tsung-Huang Hsiao, City councilor Chi-Feng Lin, Chih-Chang Shih, De-Yu Lin, Shi-Kai Chen, Chih-Chung Hsieh, Yao-Chung Chang, Shu-Hua Chen, Ya-Ling Tsai and Yi-Wei Lin to join the site survey.

Tunghai University President Kuo-En Chang said that the Luce Chapel has been upgraded to a national monument, so we will follow the maintenance procedures for national cultural asset preservation to ensure the sustainability of the Chapel. The renovation will start at the end of this year, marking a large-scale renovation to maintain this cultural property, which carries an important image value of Taiwan. President Chang thanked Deputy Legislative President Tsai and Tunghai alumni legislators and councillors for their support.

Deputy President of the Legislative Yuan Chi-chang Tsai said that for 60 years, the Luce Chapel has been the common of all Tunghai-ers, a landmark of Taichung, and a pride of all people of Taiwan. The renovation of such a major historical building requires huge engineering efforts. Tsai thanked the Ministry of Culture for supporting 95% of the total budget of 38 million NTD.
