The ceremony began with a prayer by Pastor David, and then followed by opening remarks given by Vice President Wang and Dr. Tsai. In his remarks, Vice President Wang encouraged, “This year is different from other years and memorable because we are all wearing masks. Due to COVID-19, many countries have closed their borders and put in quarantine. To Tunghai University, which emphasizes international education, our ways of international interaction must change, but I believe this will not hinder how we interact and learn from each other. You all are ready to move on and step into a new stage of life, bringing with you the professional skills you learn in the university, going back to your own country or different country. We all know that there will be obstacles and challenges in the future, but you must remember that obstacles are a gift of growth, although we would not want too many of this gift. Tunghai University is a Christianity-based university, so I would like to encourage everyone with the following words: Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love; and make every effort to keep the unity through the bond of peace. In the end of our life, we need love from friends, love from family, and love from colleague, but only love from God will never dry up. We give thanks to our Chief International Officer, staff members from the Office of International Relations, and all international students from all associations for organizing this commencement. Soar high and have a bright future!”

Due to COVID-19 situation, there were 120 graduates, including those from China, Hong Kong, and Macao, who could not come back to Taiwan to attend the ceremony; so even China Association representative, Jiong Tao Rong, gave his speech through video recording. In his speech, Jiong Tao mentioned, “Even though I cannot go back to Tunghai to attend the graduation ceremony due to the COIVD-19 situation, I really miss everything and everyone in Taiwan, especially the friends and teachers in Tunghai. When the pandemic end, I will definitely go back to Tunghai to meet with everyone. And, bless all graduates. Happy graduation.” Although the video is but a few minutes, it is full of affection and warmth. Next was graduation song led by Nadya (Department of Food Science) from Indonesia, Eugene (Department of Food Science) from Malaysia, and Micky (Department of Business Administration) from Malaysia. This year, because of the COVID-19 situation, it took less than two weeks from organizing to conducting the ceremony; for the same reason, some of the students from China, Hong Kong, and Macao were not able to come back to Taiwan, and some international graduates’ parents were also unable to enter Taiwan to attend the ceremony. Therefore the, Office of International Relations worked to have the ceremony broadcasted online for those students and parents that could not attend to see. Other than that, it was also planned for the graduates to give thanks to their parents by giving a bow to the camera. Vice President Wang gave a message to those international graduates and parents, thanking the parents for trusting Tunghai University and sending their children to Tunghai for education. He also sent blessing peace and happiness to all the guests and family members watching online.
