For the first time since the start of the IBA program, three International Business Administration majors and one minor teamed up for nine days to take on the 2019 HSBC Taiwan Business Case Competition. The idea to participate in the competition stemmed from Chemical and Materials Science Engineering major and IBA minor, Louis Leonardo. When asked about how he heard of the competition, Louis said that his friend from Taipei told him about the competition and encouraged him to form a group of his own at Tunghai. When he thought about who to recruit for this group, he found willing participants in Rosetta, Ha Thu My, and Chiuzu. The three IBA majors all did a case study challenge together last year on a smaller scale with some success, so the four of them came together to form a team this year. They believe that one of their group’s strengths is their English language abilities since the competition is conducted entirely in English.
The competition, hosted by HSBC and KPMG, required participating university student groups to examine the case study, “Starbucks in China: Managing Growth Through Innovation.” The same case study and tasks are given to all groups across Taiwan and Hong Kong to complete. One of the tasks is to design an innovation framework for Starbucks in China and to create a presentation that pitches their idea. Each group must also make a five minute video introducing themselves and talking about what they accomplished. With help from their mentor, IBA Professor Howard Chen, along with the help of Professor Carol Troy and Professor Frank Lien, the group was able to submit their project. Louis, Rosetta, Ha Thu My, and Chiuzu are competing against other Taiwanese university students. If they win the regional competition, then they will compete in the Taiwan finals in Taipei. If the group wins the Taiwan finals then they will travel to Hong Kong for the international finals. The International College congratulates these driven students on a job well done, and wishes them luck as they await their results in March!
